The confusion arises from the interpretation of the dates and the development of reading and writing. Writing indeed emerged around 3200 BCE in Mesopotamia with the creation of cuneiform script. Reading, as an activity, naturally followed the invention of writing because reading is the process of interpreting written symbols. Therefore, it is not accurate to say that reading came before writing. Instead, reading and writing developed concurrently as writing systems were created and people learned to interpret them.
Key Concept
The development of writing systems in ancient civilizations
Writing systems, such as cuneiform in Mesopotamia and hieroglyphics in Egypt, were developed around 3200 BCE. These systems allowed for the recording of information, which could then be read and interpreted. The process of reading these symbols would have developed alongside the creation of the writing systems themselves. Therefore, reading did not precede writing; rather, they evolved together as part of the same process
