2. The outline method
Indented hierarchy: main topic at the margin, supporting points one tab in, evidence and examples two or three tabs in.
- Write the lecturer's stated topic at the left margin as soon as it is named.
- Indent once for each level of subordination. Do not renumber mid-lecture.
- Leave a blank indented line whenever you lose the thread, and mark it.
- After class, fill the blanks from the slides or the recording before the structure goes cold.
Strength: fast, familiar, and it mirrors how most exam questions are scoped.
Weakness: it fails silently. Kiewra, Kauffman, Robinson, DuBois and Staley (1999) found matrix notes beat outline notes on both detail recall and understanding of how details relate, because an outline records depth without recording comparison.
3. The sentence method
Every new fact goes on its own numbered line. No hierarchy, no formatting decisions, no lag.
- Number each line as you write. One idea per number, however short.
- Mark anything the lecturer flags as important with a symbol in the margin.
- Within 48 hours, group the numbered lines into three to five themes.
- Rewrite each theme as a single paragraph. Discard the original numbering.

4. Flow notes

5. The charting method
Charting is the matrix format that outperformed outlines in Kiewra's 1999 study. You draw the table before the lecture, then fill cells as content arrives.
- Read the lecture title and decide the comparison axis: cases, theories, organs, periods, firms.
- Draw four to six columns for the attributes the exam will test. Label them before class starts.
- Fill cells in whatever order the lecturer moves. Leave gaps rather than guessing.
- Close the gaps from the reading, then cover one column and reconstruct it.
Strength: the empty cell is the point. It shows you exactly what you missed, which no linear format does. Weakness: you have to predict the comparison axis in advance, and a lecture that turns out to be a single narrative will not fit the grid.
6. The mapping method
Popularised by Tony Buzan in the 1970s, mapping puts the central concept at the page centre and branches outward, with relationships carried by the lines rather than the words.
- Write the lecture's central concept in the middle of a landscape page.
- Branch outward for each major subtopic. Use one word per branch.
- Label the connecting lines with the relationship: causes, requires, contradicts.
- Add cross-links between distant branches after class. Those links are the study material.
Strength: it makes prerequisite chains visible, which is the failure point in sequential courses. 8. Zettelkasten
Niklas Luhmann built roughly 90,000 index cards across his career, each holding one idea and pointing to others. The system converts reading into an argument you can retrieve.
- Capture fleeting notes anywhere during reading. Treat them as disposable.
- Within a week, rewrite each into a permanent note: one idea, in your own words, that stands alone.
- Link each permanent note to at least one existing note, and state why in the link.
- Keep bibliographic notes separate so the idea layer never collapses into a reading list.
Strength: for a thesis or a 4,000-word essay, it eliminates the blank-page problem. The argument already exists in the links.
Weakness: the setup cost is real and the payoff is delayed by months, which makes it a poor choice for a single semester course.
9. SQ3R
Francis Robinson published SQ3R in Effective Study (1946). It is a reading protocol rather than a page layout: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review.
- Survey headings, figures and the chapter summary in under five minutes.
- Convert each heading into a question before reading the section beneath it.
- Read one section, then close the book and recite the answer aloud.

This is the most contested question in the field, and the honest answer is that it depends on whether you review.
Voyer, Ronis and Byers (2022) pooled 77 effect sizes from 39 samples and found no method advantage once laptop distraction was removed. Flanigan and colleagues (2024) pooled 24 studies and found a small handwriting advantage that only appears when notes are both recorded and studied.
