In 2023, Biwer and colleagues randomized 87 students into three break conditions during their own self-study. Students who self-regulated their breaks took longer sessions and longer breaks, and reported more fatigue and distraction alongside lower concentration and motivation than students on systematic breaks. In 2025, Smits, Wenzel and de Bruin randomized 94 students across two-hour authentic study sessions, comparing self-regulated breaks, strict Pomodoro, and a middle option called Flowtime. Pomodoro breaks produced a faster rise in fatigue, and both Pomodoro and Flowtime produced a faster fall in motivation, than self-regulated breaks. Those slope differences did not translate into overall differences in fatigue or motivation, and the groups matched on productivity, task completion, and flow.
The authors' own conclusion is blunt: no one of these break-taking techniques should be more highly recommended over the others.
Read the two together and a defensible position emerges. Timed breaks reliably change the experience of studying. Neither trial found they change the output. Both measured task completion. Neither found a difference.
Which means the Pomodoro method is best understood as a starting mechanism, not a learning mechanism. It gets you into the chair. What you do once you are there is governed by active recall and spaced repetition, which have decades of evidence behind them that the timer does not.

Then stop using 25 minutes. The interval was never the point, and the 2023 trial found that 12-minute blocks with 3-minute breaks delivered the same benefits as 24-minute blocks.
The 2025 trial also tested Flowtime, sometimes called Flowmodoro. You study for as long as you can concentrate, then take a break whose length scales to the block you just finished: roughly 5 minutes after a short block, longer after a long one.
