Why memorised entries fail on unseen transactions
Every accounting exam contains a transaction the lecture did not use. A student who memorised entries has nothing to fall back on, while a student who derives from the accounting equation has the same tool they had all semester. The tutor refuses to lead with the entry, asking first which accounts moved and in which direction.
