A newspaper reports that people who drink coffee daily score higher on a memory test than people who do not, and concludes that coffee improves memory. An HP1000 exam question asks you to evaluate this reasoning. Which response is strongest?

Why this one wins

Identify the design. Two groups were compared as they already were; nothing was manipulated and nobody was assigned to a condition. That makes it correlational evidence.

Correlational evidence leaves both directionality and confounding open. Better memory could plausibly precede coffee drinking through some shared cause, and variables such as age, sleep, occupation or income are related to both.
Say what would settle it. Random assignment to a caffeine or placebo condition removes the third-variable explanation by construction, which is why the experimental design is the one that licenses a causal claim.
Keep the critique proportionate. The third and fourth options overcorrect: they reject the finding on grounds that would rule out most of psychology, and an exam answer that does this loses the marks it gains for scepticism.

The weaker choice: Treating scepticism as a substitute for argument. Answers that say a claim is unmeasurable or ungeneralisable sound rigorous but apply equally to every study, which is exactly why they earn little credit. What HP1000 is, and where it sits

HP1000 is the gateway course for psychology at NTU: it is the first core course in the degree, a required course for the second major and the minor, and it is open to students from other programmes as an elective. That mix is worth knowing about before you take it.

The course gives a concise overview of contemporary psychology across eleven areas: biopsychology and neuroscience, sensation and perception, learning, memory, cognition, consciousness, development over the lifespan, personality, social psychology and psychological disorders. The breadth is the point. Each area gets enough time to establish its central theories and their limits, and the later psychology courses go deep in one area at a time.

Underneath the survey structure sits a second agenda that the course is explicit about: understanding the role of empirical evidence in creating and constraining theory. Several of the intended learning outcomes are about reasoning scientifically and making critical judgements about arguments rather than about content recall, and the assessment rewards students who take that seriously.

How it differs from its first-year siblings. HP1000 is the survey. HP1100 Fundamentals of Social Science Research, which most psychology courses list as a prerequisite, is where research design and statistics are developed, so the two are usually taken close together.

  • You can hold breadth without losing structure. Eleven areas in one semester rewards students who build a map rather than a pile of notes.
  • You are interested in why a finding is believed, not only what it says. Several learning outcomes are about evidence and critical judgement.
  • You write clearly under time pressure, since 85% of the mark is written in two sittings.
  • You start revision from the early topics rather than the recent ones, because the midterm arrives at 35%.

You may struggle if

  • You rely on end-of-semester cramming. The midterm is worth more than a third of the course and falls mid-semester.
  • You memorise theories without their limitations. The outcomes explicitly ask for strengths and limitations, and answers that give only the theory leave marks behind.
  • You expect the course to be about therapy and disorders. Those are one topic among eleven; most of the course is experimental and cognitive.
  • You skip the participation and research component as small. It is 15% between them, which is the difference between grade bands.

What top students do differently
  • For every major theory, write down one finding that supports it and one that constrains it. That pairing is what the strengths-and-limitations outcome is asking for and it converts directly into exam marks.
  • Practise the evidence questions rather than the content questions: given a claim and a study design, say what can and cannot be concluded.
  • Build one page per topic with the key theories, the classic studies and the current status of each. Ten pages beats a full set of notes for a survey course.
  • Take the research participation option if you can. Seeing a study run from the inside makes the methods material concrete in a way reading does not.

The mistakes that cost marks

Reading a correlation as a cause. The single most tested reasoning error in introductory psychology. Whenever nothing was manipulated, both directionality and confounding remain open, and saying so specifically is what earns the mark.

Presenting a theory without its limits. The stated outcome asks for strengths and limitations. An answer that describes a theory fully but never says where it breaks down is an incomplete answer, not a safe one.

Underestimating the midterm. At 35% it is larger than most first-year midterms, and the material it covers is the foundation the second half assumes.

Overcorrecting into blanket scepticism. Dismissing findings as unmeasurable or ungeneralisable applies to everything and therefore explains nothing. Name the specific weakness in the specific design.
