Selection Index, the scale National Merit is decided on

Format, windows and scoring are set by the College Board. AskSia is an independent study tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the College Board or the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Confirm your school's exact test day with your counsellor. Spotted something out of date? Tell us and we will correct it.

National Merit

The only PSAT that pays.

For eligible 11th graders the PSAT/NMSQT is not practice. It is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, and qualification runs off a Selection Index rather than your headline score. Sia tracks both numbers separately from your first diagnostic, so you always know which one your plan is actually moving.

  • 1Your Selection Index is built from the Reading and Writing and Math section scores and runs from 48 to 228, on a different arithmetic to the 320 to 1520 total.
  • 2Cutoffs are set per state and published after the fact, so the honest target is a band rather than a number. Sia plans to the band for your state and shows the distance left.
  • 3Only the 11th grade sitting counts, and only for students who meet the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's entry requirements. There is no retake.

Selection Index cutoffs are set and published by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation after each cycle. Any figure quoted before results, here or anywhere else, is an estimate from previous years. AskSia is not affiliated with, endorsed by or reviewed by the College Board or the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

How the PSAT agent works

From unknown starting point to a plan you can follow.

Three steps turn your current score, target and testing week into a plan that changes as you improve. It takes about three minutes and it is free.

PSAT prep in AskSia, step 1: diagnose your real starting point
Step 1

Diagnose your real starting point

Take a short diagnostic. Sia returns a PSAT score range and maps your strengths and gaps across the skill domains the test actually reports.

PSAT prep in AskSia, step 2: build backwards from your testing week
Step 2

Build backwards from your testing week

Choose your target score and the week your school is testing. Sia forecasts a realistic gain and assigns every study day between now and then.

PSAT prep in AskSia, step 3: practise, learn the trap, and re-plan
Step 3

Practise, learn the trap, and re-plan

Work exam-format questions. Every miss produces coaching on the specific trap you fell for, then tomorrow's plan changes around the result.

The loop runs after every session
  • Sia measures which skills and traps cost you points.
  • Your live score forecast moves with the evidence.
  • The next study block is rewritten around what changed.
A worked question

What a marked answer actually looks like.

One question in the PSAT/NMSQT Reading and Writing format, worked through the way the answer key reads it, with the point that goes missing flagged at each step.

Reading and Writing, inference

In a long-running survey of an alpine meadow, researchers found that a native wildflower now opens its blooms about eleven days earlier in the season than herbarium specimens collected at the same sites in the 1960s. The moth that pollinates it, however, still emerges in the same week of the year that it always has.

The text ends with a blank. Which conclusion do those two findings, taken together, most directly support?

Reading and Writing: Inferences, one of the four tested domains. Written by AskSia in the published digital test format. This is not a College Board question, and AskSia does not reproduce official questions or past papers.

1Find the hinge
The text gives exactly two facts and joins them with “however”: one thing moved eleven days, the other did not move at all. The blank has to be what those two facts together imply.
Where the point goes. An Inferences blank is a conclusion, not a summary. A choice that restates one of the two facts without joining them is the most common way this question is lost.
2Cut what the text never says
One choice says the moth’s emergence is triggered by the blooming: that supplies a cause the text never mentions and reverses the only relationship described. One says the wildflower now depends on a different pollinator: a second species that appears nowhere in the passage. One says the herbarium record is unreliable: that attacks the evidence the passage rests on.
Where the point goes. Plausible biology is not evidence. A change of pollinator is true of real species somewhere, and it is still wrong here, because out of scope beats scientifically reasonable every time on this test.
3Take the smallest step
The key is that the wildflower and its pollinator are drifting apart in time. If the blooming date moves earlier and the emergence date does not move, the window in which the two overlap shrinks. Nothing beyond the two dates is needed to say that.
Where the point goes. The correct choice adds no mechanism and no consequence. Anything that explains why the shift happened, or predicts what it will cause, has travelled further than the text.

Adaptive day-by-day plan

Every day has a job, and the plan changes with you.

Sia plans backwards from your target score and your school's testing week. Finish early, fall behind, or fix a skill and the next session changes automatically.

  • Daily blocks for learning, drilling, review and full mocks

Per-mistake trap coaching

It tells you why you got it wrong, not just the right letter.

When you miss, Sia names the specific wrong answer you chose and explains the trap: the misread, the partial calculation, or the plausible wrong step.

  • Per-distractor explanations for the answer you selected
  • Trap types modelled on the published digital test design

Why AskSia

Four things the big players do not do.

Web apps hand you a question dump. Human tutors cost thousands. Official prep has no coaching. AskSia is a different category.

The two tests share a format, a scale design and a skill map, which is why PSAT results are the cleanest early read on where an SAT plan should start. Sia carries your PSAT skill map straight into the SAT plan rather than making you diagnose twice.

Frequently asked questions

Questions, answered.

The PSAT/NMSQT is given inside a testing window rather than on one national date: 1 to 31 October 2026. Your school picks the exact day inside that window, so the date to plan around comes from your counsellor or test coordinator, not from College Board. Some schools also offer the Saturday administration on Saturday 17 October 2026.
The PSAT/NMSQT takes 2 hr 14 min and has 98 scored questions: 54 Reading and Writing questions in 64 minutes, 44 Math questions in 70 minutes. It is digital and adaptive, sat in the Bluebook app, and scored from 320 to 1520.
You do not register yourself. Through your school, not directly with College Board. Your counsellor or test coordinator sets the date and handles sign-up. About $18 to $30, often covered or subsidised by the school. Fee waivers are available for eligible students.
National Merit uses a Selection Index rather than your total score. The index is built from your Reading and Writing and Math section scores and runs from 48 to 228. Only 11th graders who meet the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's entry requirements are considered. Cutoffs are set per state each year and are published after the fact, so no one can tell you this year's number in advance.
It depends on your state and on the year. The qualifying Selection Index differs by state because the National Merit Scholarship Corporation allocates Semifinalist places proportionally, and the threshold moves with each cohort. Recent cutoffs have generally sat in the low 200s on the 48 to 228 Selection Index, with high-competition states at the top of that band. Treat any specific figure you read as an estimate from previous years, not a target guaranteed to work.
No, and no legitimate tool has them. Official questions are the copyrighted property of College Board. Every AskSia question is written by AskSia to the published format, then selected for the individual student based on the skills they are losing points on. What matches the real exam is the format: the same sections, question types, timing and adaptive module structure. PSAT/NMSQT is a registered trademark of the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, neither of which endorses or reviews AskSia.
Yes. AskSia is free to download on Mac and Windows with no credit card. The free tier includes the diagnostic, the adaptive day-by-day plan and personalised practice with coaching. The optional $79 one-time upgrade adds the complete question bank and all full-length practice tests.
Yes, more than for almost any other pairing. The two tests share a format, a scale design and a skill map, so the diagnostic that maps your PSAT gaps is measuring exactly the skills the SAT will score. Sia carries that skill map straight into an SAT plan rather than making you diagnose twice.
Yes. AskSia is a native desktop app for macOS 12 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel, and for Windows 10 and 11. Both builds are code signed. There are also iOS and Android apps, and this prep mode is one of several study modes inside the same account.
