The Pedagogy, Space and Technology Framework

Three questions that only work in one order

The framework the course opens its design work with sets pedagogy, space and technology in a relationship rather than a list. Pedagogy is enhanced by technology and enlarged by space; space is enabled by technology and embeds the pedagogy; technology encourages certain pedagogies and extends the space. The practical content of that arrangement is a rule about sequence.

Settle the pedagogy first by naming the target learners, the intended outcome across knowledge, skills and attitudes, and how the learning is to be brought about. Then ask what kind of space can enable that pedagogy, which is where a design meets its first hard constraint. Only then ask what digital resources will facilitate what the space has partly enabled.

Chosen at that point, a tool has a stated job and can be evaluated against it.

The same three elements, asked twice

The framework is also an evaluation instrument, because it asks its questions once during conception and design and again during implementation and operation.

The second column is what turns it from a planning aid into something you can be marked on, since the written reflection has to discuss a design and its evaluation rather than its intent. It asks what learning is observed to take place and what the evidence is, how the effectiveness of the space was measured and with which metrics, which technologies most improved learning and what was unexpected.

It also asks who was included in gathering and analysing the data, naming learners, teaching staff, administrators, senior leadership and the people who maintain the facilities and the technology.

In a student project the last of those is the person who had to set the tool up and keep it running, and they are the group most often left out.

What a room forbids

The chapter makes the space question concrete by starting with the arrangement everyone recognises.

Seating in rows directs attention to the teacher and supports a lecture style, and it also carries four consequences: learners at the corners and the back find it hard to see or engage, the teacher cannot observe and reach everyone equally, learner-to-learner communication drops away, and movement between desks is restricted.

None of those is a complaint about rows; they are the price of the arrangement, and a designer who cannot state the price of their own layout has not made a choice. Two scenarios then change one number.

Thirty learners in a classroom being redesigned for collaboration, and two hundred in a hall with mostly fixed seats, where the question becomes how forty to fifty groups discuss at the same time and whether digital tools can compensate for what the physical space will not give.

Function before furniture

The rule the two scenarios exist to teach is that the same pedagogy does not mean the same physical layout.

What the teaching approach fixes is the list of things learners have to be able to do; head count, furniture, tools and whatever cannot be moved then settle what form each of those takes. Learners need to discuss, so arrange them to see and hear peers: group tables in a small room, clusters of neighbouring seats in a hall. They need to create together, so provide shared work surfaces, physical or digital.

They need to share, so provide somewhere to present. They need to move, so provide circulation, or controlled movement and digital exchange where circulation is impossible. When technology finally enters, two asymmetric tests apply: for teachers a tool should be quick to put up, with most of what it offers carrying no price, and for learners it should let everyone participate with no setup at all.

Apply the order in a room that forbids the pedagogy

The teacher wants a three-week design task in which teams of four build and critique each other's prototypes, and the benches cannot be moved. Work the framework in its stated order. The learning to be fostered is critique and revision, so learners must produce something visible, read a peer's work and respond to what they read. The room supports individual production and destroys face-to-face critique, because a team cannot form a circle and no learner can see a screen that is not their own. Naming that loss is the design move rather than the failure. Technology now has a job: a shared board that carries every prototype into one visible place, and written peer comment threads that do not require eye contact. The teacher keeps the pedagogy, concedes the physical arrangement, and buys back visibility with a tool chosen after the constraint was known.

Can I start from a technology my school has already bought?

You can, but you have to run the order backwards to recover it. Ask what that technology genuinely affords that nothing else does, then find the parts of the syllabus whose outcomes have that shape, then design the pedagogy for those parts only, then check the space. The result is a defensible subset of lessons rather than a whole programme, and saying so is the professional answer rather than an admission.

What do I do when the room simply cannot support the pedagogy I want?

Say so, precisely, and then buy the missing function back. The framework treats a constraint as a design input rather than an excuse, so a strong answer names the function the space destroys, keeps the pedagogy, and chooses a tool whose job is to restore that one function. A design that quietly changes the pedagogy to suit the furniture has made the decision the framework exists to prevent.
