Literature Review: Searching, Reading and Synthesis

An argument about a field, not a pile of summaries

The course content table names knowledge and principles of literature review as a topic in its own right, attached to the outcome about qualitative and quantitative methods. That pairing is the clue.

A literature review here is an argument about what has and has not been established, and it is built by reading other people's method sections at least as carefully as their findings.

Two of the five criteria in the university's generic grade descriptors are decided in this section, one on organisation and referencing and one on the use of readings and literature, and the wording that separates the higher bands from the middle ones is extensive and judicious use rather than adequate reading.

Judicious describes selection and placement, so a review built from twenty well chosen studies outranks one built from sixty that arrived in the order a database returned them.

Where to search, and why the venue is part of the method

The course issues a list of indexed journals in this field, and the group task requires the article you critique to come from that indexed literature rather than from a general search.

The requirement does more than it appears to: a journal in that list has a review process you can rely on, so your reading effort goes on whether the design answers the question rather than on whether the study happened at all. The same course document points at a journal ranking service and at the citation index the university subscribes to, so the standing of a venue can be checked directly and once.

Doing that check early and recording it beside the citation prevents the awkward moment in a presentation when somebody asks where an article was published.

Screening is the visible part of the method

Published reviews in this field discard most of what they retrieve, on written criteria.

One review of pedagogical applications in schools screened 3,277 publications and analysed 183. One review of applications in higher education screened 2,656 and kept 146. A scoping review of generative tools in assessment retrieved 969 and selected 32 empirical studies.

Those are not reviews that failed to find things; they are reviews whose criteria were sharp enough to remove between ninety-four and ninety-seven per cent of what the database offered.

Your own review is smaller and the logic is identical, because a reader cannot tell a thorough search from a lucky one unless you say what you searched, what you kept and why.

Synthesis changes the unit from the article to the claim

A review that reads as one paragraph per study is an annotated bibliography, and the repair is not better prose but a second pass with a different unit.

Record for each study the population, what the technology was asked to do, what was measured and what was found, then sort by what was measured rather than by author. The distribution that appears is itself a finding about the field, and the disagreements inside it are where your gap lives.

Published reviews also supply organising axes you can borrow and cite, such as sorting by layer of the system, by the service offered to an institution, or by the theory of learning a study assumes.

Twenty-two summaries into three paragraphs that argue

Q [9 marks]. AskSia authored practice. A student has twenty-two articles on chatbots for language learning and a literature review that reads as twenty-two paragraphs. Her supervisor writes that this is an annotated bibliography. Turn the same twenty-two into three paragraphs. The marks shown are an AskSia study allocation and are not the University's marking scheme.
  • 3Re-record each article in four fields.
  • 3Sort by what was measured and describe the distribution.
  • 3Build the gap from the disagreement inside the distribution.
Record for each article only the learner population, what the chatbot was asked to do, what was measured and what was found, then sort by the third field. Suppose fourteen measured perception or satisfaction, six measured a language outcome and two measured both. That distribution is the first paragraph and it is a claim about the field rather than a summary of a paper: the literature concentrates on how learners feel about the tool, which is the pattern reviews in this area report when they note that evaluation has focused on usability rather than on learning. The second paragraph takes the six outcome studies and asks what they disagree about, which is usually population or duration rather than technology. The third states what the distribution leaves unresolved, and that sentence is the gap, now carrying twenty-two citations. Nothing new was read.
Sia tip — Check where the citation sits in each of your sentences. In a summary it sits at the start, because the paper is the subject; in a synthesis it sits at the end, often three together, because the sentence is yours. Rewrite any paragraph whose citations are all at the front.
Glossary

Key terms

Indexed Literature
Journals carried by the major citation indexes, which is where the group presentation task requires the reviewed article to come from. Inclusion implies an editorial and review process you can rely on.
Inclusion Criteria
The written rules deciding which retrieved records enter a review, such as a date window, a language, an empirical requirement and a setting. They are written before screening starts, not during it.
Screening Yield
The proportion of retrieved records that survive a review's criteria. Published reviews in this field retain roughly three to six per cent, which is a sign of sharp criteria rather than a poor search.
Scoping Review
A review that maps the extent and nature of work on a topic, often using a published reporting protocol, rather than pooling results to answer a single effect question.
Synthesis Frame
The organising axis a review uses to group studies, such as the layer of the system, the service offered to an institution, or the theory of learning assumed. Borrowing a published frame is legitimate and citable.
Annotated Bibliography
A sequence of one paragraph summaries, one per source, with no claim connecting them. It is the state most first drafts of a literature review reach.
Citation Index
A database recording which publications cite which others, used here both to find related work and to check that a journal is indexed before you rely on it.
FAQ

Literature Review: Searching, Reading and Synthesis FAQ

How many sources does a literature review for this course need?

No number is published, and chasing one is the wrong instinct, because the grade descriptors reward judicious use rather than volume. What a reader can check is whether the sources you cite are the ones your argument needs: the reviews that establish the current status, the primary studies whose designs you argue with, and the work that reports the limitation you are treating as your gap.

A short list that does those three jobs reads as stronger than a long one that does none of them.

Can I build my review out of review articles?

Use them for the status paragraph and for locating a stated limitation, then go to the primary studies they name. A review citing five reviews and two primary studies tells a marker that you have read about the research rather than the research, and it leaves you unable to discuss any design in detail.

That matters practically as well, since the designs in the primary studies are the ones you have to argue with when you defend your own method.

What should I record while reading a study?

Six fields, before anything else: design, participants and how many, instrument, duration, analysis, and the single main result. That table is what the synthesis is built from, and it is almost exactly what the group presentation asks you to report about one article, so the reading serves both assessments at once.

Findings read without their method section are the reason two studies that measured different things get written up as though they disagreed.

Are research tools allowed for finding literature?

Yes, and the course points at a set of them along with the library's own guidance. They are good at the first step, which is finding the neighbours of a paper you already trust, and unreliable at the step that carries marks, because the criteria deciding what stays in your review are yours to defend.

Any use has to be declared in the same way as any other use of such tools, and every reference they suggest has to be opened and verified before you cite it.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Write your search string on paper before you open anything: three groups of terms for the technology, the population and the outcome, with synonyms inside each group. If you cannot fill the third group, the problem is the topic rather than the search, and Chapter 3 is where to go back to. Then read twenty method sections before a single discussion section, and keep the six field table as you go.
