Two exits from the same proposal
The independent project that follows this course comes in two kinds, and the first lecture separates them by who the work is for. A research project is preparation for postgraduate study and transfers knowledge to a wider academic and scholarly community. A capstone project is preparation for future employment and transfers knowledge in work related contexts.
Every other difference follows from that one. Students often read the capstone route as the practical option and the research route as the academic one, then choose on temperament, which is the wrong axis.
Each route has a failure mode that working harder cannot fix: a capstone project has a hard cliff, because something must work in front of users on the day, while a research project depends on access to participants, and a school that withdraws in week eight cannot be replaced with effort.
What each route is actually for
