Sports Technology and Performance Analysis

Two of the four course outcomes live here

One published outcome asks students to draw on the breadth of available sports technology, and on performance analysis, to build training programmes for athletes; another asks them to apply and integrate that knowledge in developing coaching interventions based on the interpretation of performance analysis.

Both name interpretation and development rather than measurement, which sets the shape of this chapter: the assessable skill is turning a number into a decision somebody makes, not owning the equipment that produced it.

The chain, and where it breaks

The chapter works a four link chain.

Capture records something; interpretation turns the record into a statement about this squad; a decision changes what happens next; and review checks the decision against what followed.

Each link has its own failure mode, and the third and fourth are where real programmes fail: a weekly report with no decision attached asks a head coach to complete the chain himself in a week when he has a team to pick, and a loop that is never closed means the same number is reported for years without anybody learning whether acting on it helped.

Where analysis attaches to a training week

The class uses a framework for periodising skill training that divides work into stages with different purposes: a coordination stage in which the athlete is searching for a movement solution, an adaptability stage in which the problem is varied so the solution must be adjusted rather than repeated, and a performance stage in which the skill is exploited under conditions resembling competition.

The stages are jobs rather than difficulty levels. The published session template then asks for only three things to be set deliberately in each part of a session: the task constraints being manipulated, any equipment modification, and the estimated task complexity.

That short list is the lesson, because a coach cannot change an athlete directly, only the problem the athlete is solving.

Monitoring, and why uptake fails

The documented example in class records a professional training week in two layers: a perceived wellbeing and readiness score submitted before training, and a load measure recorded afterwards from tracking software, read together by coaching and support staff for planning, load management and injury prevention.

The pre training reading is a question about capacity and is the only one available before a decision must be made; the post training reading is a question about dose and arrives too late to change the session that produced it.

A separate case explains why good systems go unused: coaches reported believing sport science could contribute and wanting a scientist alongside them, while giving two practical reasons for non use, a lack of time to search for new ideas and a lack of interest in academic publications. That points the fix away from persuasion and towards buying time and changing format.

Find the broken link in a tracking programme

Q [8 marks]. AskSia authored practice. A semi professional club buys fifteen tracking units and asks the strength coach to send a weekly report to the head coach. Eight weeks later the report is forwarded unread, and no hardware has failed. Diagnose it and say what you would change first. The marks shown are an AskSia study allocation and are not the University marking scheme.
  • 3Name the link that failed and why it fails there.
  • 2Identify the reporting fault underneath it.
  • 3State the first change and the test of whether it worked.
The chain broke at the decision link. Measurement produced quantities and interpretation produced statements, but nothing in the arrangement named a recurring choice the report was supposed to inform, so the last two links were left to a head coach with a team to pick. Underneath it sits a reporting fault: the report almost certainly carries totals, and totals are not comparable across sessions of different length or content, whereas the published documentation reports average minutes per training area across a week with a spread attached and next to what the week was for, which is a distribution a coach can argue with. The first change is therefore not technical. Ask the head coach which decision he makes every week that this could inform and build the report backwards from the answer; if the answer is who trains fully on Thursday, the report becomes a Thursday morning list with a threshold and a recommendation. If he has no answer, the finding is that the club bought a measurement system before it had a decision to inform.
Sia tip — Convert every figure to a rate or a share of the session before comparing it. Two sessions of different length are not comparable as totals, and a coach cannot argue with a total the way they can argue with a share.
Glossary

Key terms

Task Constraint
A feature of the problem set for an athlete, such as space, numbers, rules or equipment, which a coach manipulates because the athlete cannot be changed directly.
Skill Training Stage
The purpose a training block serves, from searching for a movement solution through adapting it under varied conditions to exploiting it under competitive conditions.
Readiness Measure
A self reported score collected before training, cheap and subjective, and the only monitoring information available before a session decision has to be made.
Training Load
An objective record of what a session delivered, comparable only against sessions of similar type and length, and available only after the session it describes.
FAQ

Sports Technology and Performance Analysis FAQ

What is performance analysis actually for in this course?

For producing a decision somebody makes, which is what both relevant course outcomes ask for. That means every metric should be attached to a recurring choice with an owner, judged against a stated comparison, expressed as a rate or a share rather than a running total, and accompanied by a statement of what the instrument cannot see.

The last of those is what separates an analyst from a salesperson and is the sentence markers look for.

Why do coaches who believe in sport science not use it?

The published case gives two practical reasons rather than ideological ones: no time to look for new ideas, and no interest in reading academic publications. That rules out persuasion as a fix and leaves two levers with evidence behind them.

The structural lever buys the time back by making somebody else responsible for searching or by embedding analyst hours; the editorial lever changes the format so that the practical claim arrives first, the caveat second and the method last. Both are cheap compared with the equipment they make usable.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Take one metric your own sport uses and write the four links out for it: what is captured, what statement it supports, which decision it should change and who owns that decision, and how anybody would know afterwards whether the decision helped. Most metrics fail at the third line, and the exercise takes ten minutes.
