Four things packed into one definition
A population is a group of individuals of the same species living inside one bounded area, exposed to the same conditions, in contact with each other and breeding among themselves, and the course is explicit that the concept applies to people as well as to wildlife.
A boundary, a shared set of conditions, interaction and interbreeding: a survey that ignores any one of the four is describing something other than a population.
Why an empty patch is not a spare one
