What this course is actually asking you to do
This is a core postgraduate course in the theory and practice of financial auditing, taught in the Department of Accountancy within the Master of Accountancy programme.
- Assessed by Class participation, a group project on published inspection reports, a two-hour test and a three-hour final examination.
- The skill being tested Naming the assertion at issue, naming the direction the error would run, and choosing a procedure that could actually detect it.
- Hardest step Testing completeness, because the missing item is by definition not in the records you would otherwise sample.
- Where to confirm The test date, the group size and any change to the split are controlled by the course Moodle page.
How ACT501 is assessed
| Component | Weight | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Class participation | 10% | Attendance, preparation and contribution in class, against a published rubric |
| Group project | 15% | Case analysis of published inspection reports on one audit firm, presented in class |
| Test | 25% | Two hours, placed in the eighth teaching week, time and venue to be announced |
| Final examination | 50% | Three hours, covering the principles and concepts of the course |
The published syllabus sets class participation at ten per cent, group assignments at fifteen, and examinations at seventy-five, made up of a test at twenty-five and a final at fifty; the four total one hundred. The assessment page adds the durations, two hours for the midterm and three for the final. Two points differ inside the course's own materials: the syllabus says groups are normally five to six students while the group project instruction says seven to eight, and the two documents split the group mark differently. No late-submission penalty rate appears anywhere. A numeric attendance threshold is not stated in the course materials, and neither is a hurdle or a pass mark, so check the course Moodle page and the Regulations Governing University Examinations and Course Work for anything that bears on whether you pass.

Three quarters of the mark is decided by two written papers, and the published rubric for them is unusually informative: forty per cent for comprehension of the relevant concepts, forty for their application to the problem posed, ten for expressing ideas logically and clearly, and ten for quality of English.
Almost everything in the guide below is organised around the second of those forty per cent bands, because that is where prepared candidates separate from well-read ones.
Assurance, Attestation and the Financial Statement Audit
The opening chapter fixes three words that sound interchangeable and are not.
Assurance services improve the quality of information for a decision maker; attestation services are a subset in which a practitioner examines whether management's assertion can be relied upon; financial statement audits are a subset of that.
The chapter then explains why anybody buys the service, through the separation of ownership from management, the information asymmetry and conflict of interest that follow, and the information risk an audit exists to reduce.
Reasonable Assurance, Materiality and the Audit Opinion
Two technical words inside the stated objectives decide everything the auditor later does.
Reasonable assurance is high but not absolute, and three inherent limitations explain why the gap cannot be closed. Materiality is the threshold above which a misstatement could be expected to influence users' decisions.
The chapter closes on the four opinions, reached by asking whether the unresolved problem is a misstatement or a gap in evidence, and then whether its effect is confined or pervasive.
Auditor Liability, Independence and Professional Skepticism
Criminal exposure requires participation: inciting, helping, concealing, impeding, taking payment for silence, or knowingly causing a required statement to be omitted from a report.
Civil exposure requires neither agreement nor intent, resting on a negligence formula from 1856 whose key word is unintentionally.
Against those sit three positive requirements, and the chapter separates them so that a described failure can be attributed to the right one.
Auditing Standards and the Shape of an Audit
Which rules govern an engagement depends on where the entity is, whether it is listed, what is being reported on and how complex the entity is.
The chapter sets out the Hong Kong families including the separate standard for less complex entities and the sustainability assurance requirements, the mainland and international systems, and the American fork between listed and non-listed companies.
It then maps the stages an engagement runs through, which is also the order of the teaching schedule.
Management Assertions and What Could Go Wrong
Everything in the second half of the course begins here. The chapter sets out the two assertion families, the three members they share, and the direction of error each assertion guards against.
The asymmetry between existence and completeness is structural rather than psychological, and it is the reason procedures have to run in opposite directions along the same chain of documents.
Audit Evidence: Sufficiency, Appropriateness, Reliability
Sufficiency measures quantity, appropriateness measures quality, and appropriateness splits into relevance and reliability.
The chapter works through what the accounting records comprise, what sits outside them, the five comparisons that rank reliability by source and route, and the category that goes wrong in real files, which is a document that began outside the entity and reached the auditor through it.
The Seven Audit Procedures and When Each One Works
Procedures sit on two layers: the purpose they serve and the act performed.
The chapter separates risk assessment procedures, tests of controls and substantive work, then takes the seven acts one at a time with the limits attached to observation and inquiry.
Vouching and tracing are treated as one act in two directions, because choosing the direction is choosing the population and the population decides which errors could ever be found.
Audit Documentation and Assembling the Audit File
The standard of detail is defined by a named reader rather than by length: an experienced auditor with no previous connection to the engagement must be able to follow it.
The chapter covers contents, the six format elements, the permanent and current files, retention, and the rule that bites after assembly, which forbids deletion absolutely and permits addition only with its reasons recorded.
Planning the Audit and the Audit Risk Model
Acceptance questions come before planning and cannot be repaired later. Materiality becomes three linked decisions rather than one figure.
The chapter then separates the two risk components the auditor assesses from the one the auditor sets, and works through reading a paragraph of client facts as assessments attached to named assertions.
Internal Control and Auditing the Transaction Cycles
Five weeks of the schedule are covered here: the components a system of internal control is grouped into, the walkthrough that confirms the auditor's understanding, the difference between preventive and detective controls, and the four transaction cycles with the direction of risk each one carries.
Completing the Audit and the Auditor's Report
Completion concerns the statements as a whole and the passage of time.
The chapter sorts subsequent events by whether the condition existed at the reporting date, covers the search for unrecorded contingent liabilities, places representation letters correctly in the reliability ranking, and sets out the nine elements of a report in the order they appear.
Professional Ethics and Sustainability Assurance
The final chapter covers the fundamental principles, the five threat families and the identify, evaluate, respond shape that every ethics answer needs, together with the external test the code applies.
It then carries the same machinery onto sustainability information, which the syllabus names among its learning outcomes and its reading list.
Two details are worth checking on the course site before you rely on either version. The syllabus says groups are normally five to six students, while the group project instruction on the course site says seven to eight people per group.
And the syllabus rubric splits the group mark as content and subject matter knowledge sixty per cent, organisation and presentation twenty, verbal behaviour ten and non-verbal behaviour ten, while the project instruction splits it as content, subject matter knowledge and analysis sixty, reporting style and presentation twenty, and individual presentation skills twenty.
Both come from the course's own materials; treat the project instruction as the operational document for this project.
How to use this guide
Read the front matter first, then work one chapter at a time.
Each chapter ends in practice items with full answers; write your own answer before reading them, because recognising a good answer and producing one under time pressure are different abilities and only the second is assessed.
The practice chapter works a full set in the published question mix, and the closing chapter is a revision pass for the morning of a paper.
Evidence and assessment control
Assessment labels and weights follow the published course syllabus and the assessment page for this offering.
Teaching explanations, worked examples and practice items are independently authored and are not University assessment material; any marks shown on them are an AskSia study allocation. The course materials state no hurdle, no minimum mark on any component, no attendance threshold and no late-submission penalty rate, so confirm those, the test date and any change to the split on the course site.
A numeric attendance threshold is not stated anywhere in the course materials, and neither is a hurdle or a pass mark, so check the course Moodle page and the Regulations Governing University Examinations and Course Work for anything that bears on whether you pass.
Turn one client fact into an assertion, a direction and a procedure
- 3Name the assertions, one over the balance and one over the transaction.
- 3State what each misstatement does to receivables, revenue and inventory.
- 3Give a procedure that could detect an error in the direction you named.
Key terms
- Assurance Service
- Independent professional work that raises the quality of information, or of the setting around it, for somebody who has to decide. It holds attestation work and audits of accounts inside it.
- Information Risk
- The danger that what a company's management circulates is untrue or misleads. Reducing it is the economic reason an audit is bought.
- Reasonable Assurance
- A high level of comfort that stops short of certainty, expressed positively in the opinion. Three inherent limits put certainty out of reach.
- Materiality
- The largest error the accounts could carry while leaving every reader's decision on the basis of them unchanged.
- Management Assertion
- A claim, spoken or merely implied, about how an item in the accounts has been recognised, measured, presented and disclosed.
- Completeness
- The claim that nothing which belonged in the books has been left out. Because the missing item is not in the records, the test has to start outside them.
- Sufficient Appropriate Evidence
- Enough evidence to answer the assessed risk, and evidence good enough to bear on the claim and to signal its real state dependably.
- Vouching
- Starting from something already booked and walking it backwards to the paperwork that started it, which tests existence or occurrence rather than completeness.
- Detection Risk
- The danger that the auditor's own work fails to find an error that is really there. It is set through what work is done, when, and how widely, rather than assessed.
- Self-review Threat
- The danger that a practitioner cannot properly weigh the outcome of an earlier judgement or service delivered by that practitioner or by the firm.
ACT501 FAQ
How much does each piece of work count?
The published syllabus splits the mark four ways: class participation ten per cent, group assignments fifteen, and examinations seventy-five made up of a test at twenty-five and a final at fifty. The assessment page on the course site repeats the same four components and adds the durations, two hours for the midterm and three for the final. The four weights total one hundred, so there is no residual component to look for.
When is the test, and what will it cover?
The teaching schedule places the midterm examination in the eighth teaching week, alongside the audit of cash balances, and records the time and venue as to be announced. So the week is published and the date is not.
By that point the schedule has covered the introduction to auditing, assertions and evidence, planning and materiality, risk assessment, internal control, responses to assessed risks with the revenue cycle, and the purchase cycle. Confirm the date on the course site rather than working from anything you have been told informally.
What is the group project, and what is actually required?
It is a case analysis built on published inspection reports of one audit firm, with a maximum of three reports for the same firm drawn from recent years.
The slide pack has to introduce the inspecting body's responsibilities and the firm's background, then critically discuss four to five audit deficiencies identified in the reports, discuss the relevant auditing standards and how those procedures should have been performed, design substantive procedures covering nature, timing and extent for the accounts or disclosures identified, and give recommendations.
Every group member must present, in a fifteen-minute presentation followed by questions.
Why do existence and completeness need different procedures?
Because the error each one admits sits in a different population. An item recorded but not real can be selected from the ledger and traced back to its source, so vouching reaches it. An item that should have been recorded and was not is absent from the ledger by definition, so no sample drawn from the ledger could ever contain it.
Completeness therefore has to be tested from outside the records: from despatch notes, goods received notes, supplier statements or payments made after the year end, following each forward into the accounts.
What makes one piece of audit evidence better than another?
Two questions asked in order, and neither is about how official the document looks. Who prepared it: evidence from a knowledgeable source independent of the company outranks evidence generated inside it, and internally generated evidence is stronger where controls over that information are effective. And how it reached the auditor: obtained directly beats obtained through the client, and an original beats a copy.
A bank statement handed over by the finance team and the same statement received from the bank carry identical information and sit on different rungs.
Is a written representation from management enough to close a point?
Only where no other evidence could reasonably be expected to exist, and even then it corroborates rather than substitutes. A representation is internally generated evidence from the party with an interest in the answer, which places it low in the reliability ranking.
Where third-party evidence is available, a team that resolves the point by letter alone has substituted where the standards expect corroboration, and the substitution is visible on the file.
How should an ethics question be answered?
In three steps, because that is how the code works. Identify the threat, naming the family: self-interest, self-review, advocacy, familiarity or intimidation. Evaluate whether it is at an acceptable level, applying the test the code sets, which asks whether a reasonable and informed third party weighing the facts would conclude that compliance with the fundamental principles is compromised.
Then respond, by eliminating the circumstance, applying a safeguard that reduces the threat to an acceptable level, or declining or ending the engagement.
Is there a hurdle or an attendance requirement?
No hurdle, minimum mark, attendance threshold or late-submission penalty rate is stated anywhere in the published course materials, which is not the same as a rule that none exists. Class participation is worth ten per cent and its published rubric weights attendance alongside preparation and contribution, so attendance bears on a mark without any threshold being published.
The syllabus also directs students to the Regulations Governing University Examinations and Course Work. A numeric attendance threshold is not stated anywhere in the course materials, and neither is a hurdle or a pass mark, so check the course Moodle page and the Regulations Governing University Examinations and Course Work for anything that bears on whether you pass.
How to study for the exam
Carry one company you actually know through every chapter, and before reading a chapter's answer, write your own: which assertion is at risk here, in which direction, and what would find it. Then practise the move the papers are built on. Take any fact about a client, write the caption, the assertion, the direction and the procedure in four clauses, and check that the procedure could reach the direction you named.
Twenty minutes of that is worth more than a second pass over the lecture notes, because it rehearses the forty per cent of the rubric given to applying concepts specifically rather than the forty given to holding them.
