Where the marks actually are

AP Business unit weights, and what that means for your plan.

Unit 3, which covers personal saving and borrowing plus business finance and accounting, is the heaviest at 25 to 35% of the multiple-choice section, and Units 1 and 2 are 20 to 30% each. Unit 5 is not assessed on the exam at all, so the personal finance you are marked on sits inside Units 1 to 4, where it is 20 to 25% of the multiple-choice questions.

not assessed
Heaviest units. Where a fixed hour returns the most marks. Published unit weight, as a share of the multiple-choice section.

Syllabus order is not exam order, so Sia weights your study days by what each unit is worth rather than by when it is taught. College Board publishes unit weights as ranges, so they do not sum to 100%. The published weights are the units' weighting on the multiple-choice section, which is 60% of the exam score. The other 40% sits in four free-response questions, weighted by question rather than by unit. Weights are taken from the published Course and Exam Description and can change between years. How the AP Business agent works

From unknown starting point to a plan you can follow.

Three steps turn your current standing, your target and one fixed exam date into a plan that changes as you improve. It takes about three minutes and it is free.

AP Business prep in AskSia, step 1: diagnose which units are actually at risk
Step 1

Diagnose which units are actually at risk

Take a short diagnostic. Sia returns an AP score range and shows which of the 4 assessed units are losing you marks, rather than which ones feel hard.

AP Business prep in AskSia, step 2: build backwards from 4 may 2027
Step 2

Build backwards from 4 May 2027

Choose your target score. Sia assigns every study day between now and exam day, weighted by published unit exam weights rather than by syllabus order.

AP Business prep in AskSia, step 3: practise, get marked, and re-plan
Step 3

Practise, get marked, and re-plan

Work exam-format multiple choice and free response. Every miss produces coaching on the specific trap or the specific rubric point, then tomorrow's plan changes around it.

The loop runs after every session
  • Sia measures which skills and traps cost you points.
  • Your live score forecast moves with the evidence.
  • The next study block is rewritten around what changed.
Project, then three analyses

Fifteen percent of your score is a project examined on exam day.

Section II opens with a single question about the Business Canvas Project you built during the year, 25 minutes and 15% of the score, then gives you three more free responses in 65 minutes for the other 25%: personal finance, business concept application, and a business decision. The project itself carries no separate weight, which means the only place it can earn anything is that one exam-day question.

The project is kept live after it is finished

A canvas you can no longer explain is worth nothing on the day. Sia keeps rehearsing the project against unseen questions long after the build is done, because that is the only form it is ever assessed in.

The decision question wants a choice, not a hedge

The business decision question sets two courses of action and asks you to recommend one on criteria you establish yourself. Inventing a third option, or recommending both, scores nothing however sound the analysis.

Personal finance is the cheapest 25% on the paper

The personal finance question runs on a small, closed set of ideas that are quick to secure and stay secured. Those get drilled early, so the plan can spend its later weeks on the business analysis.

Marking follows the published rubric structure. It is AskSia's, not College Board's, and is a study aid rather than an official score.
A worked question

What a marked answer actually looks like.

One question in the AP Business free-response format, worked through the way the rubric reads it, with the point that goes missing flagged at each step.

Business decision question, three parts

Brackwell Sauces bottles 90,000 jars a year on one filling line that runs five days a week, with room for about a third more output before a second line is needed, and sells through 60 independent delis. Orders on Brackwell's own website have doubled in twelve months with no advertising behind them. A national grocery chain has now offered a supply contract that would need more jars than the single line can make. Brackwell holds $160,000 in cash and its bank will lend the rest at 9% a year. Option A, take the chain's contract, needs $250,000 for a second filling line and the food-safety audit the chain requires, and is projected to add $45,000 a year in net profit before interest; the chain sells the sauce under its own label, sets the shelf price, would account for 40% of Brackwell's sales, and can end the contract on 90 days' notice. Option B, open a direct subscription shop inside the spare capacity, needs $150,000 for a packing room and a launch campaign, and is projected to add $33,000 a year in net profit before interest; Brackwell keeps its own label, sets its own prices and holds the customer list, and the two people who already pack its orders would fill and post every box.

Respond to parts A, B and C. (A) (i) Describe one internal, market or external factor the scenario states is acting on Brackwell. (ii) Explain how that factor creates an opportunity or a problem for the business. (B) Describe a difference or a similarity between the two courses of action three times, each with specific evidence for both of them: (i) on projected annual return on investment, (ii) on one further financial criterion, (iii) on one nonfinancial criterion. (C) Recommend one of the two courses of action, explain why, and support the recommendation with three specific criteria and evidence from the scenario for each.

Unit 4: Management and strategy. Written by AskSia in the published free-response format. This is not a College Board question, and AskSia does not reproduce official questions or past papers.

1Factor and problem
A market factor. Orders on Brackwell's own website have doubled in twelve months with no advertising behind them. That creates an opportunity, because demand is growing in the one channel where Brackwell sets its own price and keeps the whole margin, so the business can raise sales and profit without first having to win a new buyer.
Where the point goes. A factor earns this point only if the scenario states it. Naming supplier power or a change in regulation, forces the course teaches but this scenario never mentions, is scored as a factor that is not indicated in the scenario and earns nothing however well it is described.
2Comparison 1
Return on investment is the extra annual profit divided by what the option costs to set up. Option A returns $45,000 ÷ $250,000 = 18% a year. Option B returns $33,000 ÷ $150,000 = 22% a year. Option B earns four percentage points more a year on every dollar committed, even though $33,000 is the smaller of the two profits.
Where the point goes. This part names return on investment and the row takes nothing else. Writing that Option A adds $45,000 a year against Option B's $33,000 is true and still scores zero here, because it is a comparison on a criterion other than projected annual ROI. A profit figure counts on this row only when it is set against the investment that produced it.
3Comparisons two and three
A further financial criterion, external funding. Option A costs $250,000 against $160,000 of cash, so $90,000 is borrowed at 9%, which is $8,100 a year and takes the $45,000 down to $36,900, while Option B costs $150,000, is paid out of cash and leaves $10,000 unspent. A nonfinancial criterion, control of the brand and the customer. Under Option A the chain owns the label, sets the shelf price, would be 40% of sales and can leave on 90 days' notice, while under Option B Brackwell keeps its label, sets its own prices and holds the customer list.
Where the point goes. Each comparison has to carry evidence on both courses of action. “Option B needs less external funding than Option A” states a real difference and earns nothing, because it is a difference not supported by evidence related to each course of action. Both sides of the figure, $90,000 borrowed and nothing borrowed, have to be on the page.
4Recommend and support
Recommend Option B, because it earns more on every dollar committed and keeps the customer relationship in Brackwell's own hands. Return on investment, 22% against 18%. External funding, nothing borrowed and $10,000 of cash still in hand, against $90,000 borrowed at 9%. Control of the brand and the customer, Brackwell's own label, prices and list, against a chain label and a buyer who can leave on 90 days' notice. Option A still earns more in dollars, $36,900 after interest against Option B's $33,000, so the recommendation gives up $3,900 a year and puts every box through the two people who already pack the orders.
Where the point goes. The evidence row is worth two points and pays by how many criteria you carry. Three criteria with evidence earn both points and two earn one, so a recommendation argued at length from a single criterion earns zero on that row however well that one criterion is evidenced.

AP exams are reported on a 1 to 5 scale. Your raw marks from both sections are combined using the published weightings, then converted to the final score.
