Where the marks actually are

AP European History unit weights, and what that means for your plan.

All nine units sit in the same band, so the exam rewards even coverage across 1450 to the present. There is no unit small enough to drop.

Syllabus order is not exam order, so Sia weights your study days by what each unit is worth rather than by when it is taught. How the AP Euro agent works

From unknown starting point to a plan you can follow.

Three steps turn your current standing, your target and one fixed exam date into a plan that changes as you improve. It takes about three minutes and it is free.

AP Euro prep in AskSia, step 1: diagnose which units are actually at risk
Step 1

Diagnose which units are actually at risk

Take a short diagnostic. Sia returns an AP score range and shows which of the 9 units are losing you marks, rather than which ones feel hard.

AP Euro prep in AskSia, step 2: build backwards from 4 may 2027
Step 2

Build backwards from 4 May 2027

Choose your target score. Sia assigns every study day between now and exam day, weighted by published unit exam weights rather than by syllabus order.

AP Euro prep in AskSia, step 3: practise, get marked, and re-plan
Step 3

Practise, get marked, and re-plan

Work exam-format multiple choice and free response. Every miss produces coaching on the specific trap or the specific rubric point, then tomorrow's plan changes around it.

The loop runs after every session
  • Sia measures which skills and traps cost you points.
  • Your live score forecast moves with the evidence.
  • The next study block is rewritten around what changed.
Document-based question

The DBQ is a procedure, and procedures are drilled.

The written half of the paper is three tasks on three different clocks, and the document-based question is the largest single piece of it, worth 25% on its own. It is scored on seven discrete rubric points, most of which have nothing to do with how much history you know. Students who revise content and never rehearse the procedure lose the same points every time.

The 15 minute reading period is part of the task

Sia times the reading period separately from the writing, because a thesis written at minute 3 and a thesis written at minute 16 are different essays.

Sourcing and complexity are the points that go missing

Evidence and contextualisation come naturally once the content is known. Sourcing and complexity have to be practised deliberately, so they get their own drills rather than waiting for the next full DBQ.

SAQ and LEQ are separate skills on separate clocks

Three short answers in 40 minutes, which close Section I, and one long essay in 40 minutes, which closes Section II, are different pacing problems. The plan rotates all three task types rather than treating the written half as one block.

Marking follows the published rubric structure. It is AskSia's, not College Board's, and is a study aid rather than an official score.
A worked question

What a marked answer actually looks like.

One question in the AP European History free-response format, worked through the way the rubric reads it, with the point that goes missing flagged at each step.

Short-answer question, secondary source

A modern scholarly history of the Reformation in the German lands argues: “Preaching filled the churches, and preaching settled nothing. The evangelical message was argued out in the pulpit and in cheap print, and then it waited on a decision no preacher could make. In 1525 the council of Nuremberg ruled for the evangelical order, the mass ended in the city's churches, and the appointment of its clergy passed to the council. Where the ruler held to Rome the same sermons produced exile instead. The confessional map of 1560 is therefore not a record of where the new theology persuaded the most people. It is a record of where authority decided for it.”

Answer all three parts. (A) Describe the argument the historian makes about what actually settled the religious question. (B) Explain how one development from outside the excerpt supports that argument. (C) Explain one effect the settlements of this kind had on European politics between 1550 and 1650.

Unit 2: Age of Reformation. Written by AskSia in the published free-response format. This is not a College Board question, and AskSia does not reproduce official questions or past papers.

1Describe the argument
One argument the excerpt makes is that the Reformation advanced where a political authority decided for it. Preaching and cheap print created the demand, but a town council or a prince was what converted a territory, so the confessional map of 1560 records official decisions rather than the relative persuasiveness of the two confessions.
Where the point goes. This row pays for an argument, not for a subject. Writing that the excerpt is about the spread of the Reformation in the German cities names what the passage discusses and leaves the marker no claim to credit, and the published scoring notes require a description to do more than mention an isolated term. Handing back one of the excerpt's own sentences without saying what it asserts fails in the same way.
2Explain outside evidence
The Peace of Augsburg of 1555 settled the religious question in the Empire by letting each ruling estate choose between the Catholic church and the Augsburg Confession for its own lands, and subjects who would not conform were left the right to sell up and leave. The settlement never asked which confession had won more of the population, and it made a ruler's choice binding on everyone who lived under him. That is the excerpt's argument about religious change written into imperial law.
Where the point goes. This row will only pay for evidence that is not in the excerpt, so Nuremberg is unusable here however well it is explained. The passage has already spent it, and a response that hands the passage's own example back has given the marker nothing the excerpt did not supply. The whole point of the row is that you bring the evidence.
3Explain the effect
Once a ruler answered for the religion of his territory, he built the machinery to run it. Lutheran princes governed their churches through consistories staffed by their own appointees and issued church ordinances that fixed doctrine, worship, marriage law and schooling for the whole territory, and Catholic rulers put the decrees of Trent to work the same way. By 1650 territorial government reached into parish life, poor relief and the classroom in a way it had not in 1550.
Where the point goes. This row is scored on what the change produced, not on what produced it. The printing press, the sale of indulgences and the theses of 1517 are the first answers to hand, and every one of them explains why the Reformation spread, so a response built on them has answered a question about causes that this part did not ask.

AP free responses are scored on discrete rubric points. Sia marks your response point by point and tells you which requirement was not met, then drills that requirement specifically.

Why AskSia

Four things the big players do not do.

Web apps hand you a question dump. Human tutors cost thousands. Official prep has no coaching. AskSia is a different category.

AP exams are reported on a 1 to 5 scale. Your raw marks from both sections are combined using the published weightings, then converted to the final score. There is no penalty for a wrong or blank multiple-choice answer, so leaving one blank is never correct strategy. Scores are usually released in early July, and College Board publishes the exact 2027 score-access dates in spring 2027.
