Where the marks actually are
AP French Language and Culture task weights, and what that means for your plan.
College Board publishes no exam weight for the six thematic units in this course, so the only weights it publishes are the five task weights, and the heaviest of those are Listening and Reading at 25% each. The heaviest single free response is the Project Presentation at 20%, but its topic is only released in January, so until then the Argumentative Essay is the free-response task you can practise end to end.

Syllabus order is not exam order, so Sia weights your study days by what each exam task is worth rather than by when it is taught. The five task figures above are the only exam weights College Board publishes for this course, and they sum to 100%. A project, then the exam
35% of your score is decided by a project you start in January.
The world language exams were rebuilt for 2027. The free response now comes first, and its two speaking questions both run off a through-course project whose topic College Board releases in January. The Project Presentation is 20% of the score and the Project Q&A is another 15%. Neither is something you can revise for in May, and your Personalized Project Reference has to be submitted through the AP Digital Portfolio by 30 April 2027.

Preparing on paper and speaking for the first time into a microphone on exam day costs marks that have nothing to do with your language. The clock and the recording are part of the task.

What a marked answer actually looks like.

Free response, audio heard twice
Faut-il maintenir le quota de chansons francophones imposé aux radios françaises ? (Should the francophone-song quota that French radio stations have to meet be kept?) The three sources pull in different directions. Source 1, the audio, is an interview with a young Belgian singer. Source 2 is an article on the hours of the day stations put their francophone titles in. Source 3 is an infographic on where listeners aged 15 to 24 actually play music.
Write the essay in French. The clock runs 55 minutes, and the first six of them are a countdown while you read the topic and the two printed sources. The audio then plays twice and is not offered again.
Question 3: Argumentative Essay. Written by AskSia in the published free-response format. This is not a College Board question, and AskSia does not reproduce official questions or past papers.

Close the opening paragraph on the answer, condition included. « Il faut maintenir le quota de chansons francophones, à condition d’en étendre l’application aux plateformes d’écoute en ligne. » That is a side, and the condition is the thing the rest of the essay will defend.
Where the point goes. Row A is a single point and it goes when the marker cannot name your side. Laying out both camps and never choosing is the published zero. Hedging is a different thing and is not penalised: the scoring notes state that a qualified or conditional position still earns the point as long as it responds to the prompt, so « à condition que » is safe and « les avis divergent » is not.
2Attribute
Name each source as you use it, and show that you read it correctly. « La Source 2 explique que les stations concentrent leurs titres francophones sur les heures de faible écoute. L’infographie de la Source 3 montre que les jeunes de 15 à 24 ans écoutent surtout en ligne. Dans la Source 1, la chanteuse ne conteste pas le principe du quota : elle reproche aux radios de le remplir avec les mêmes vingt titres. »
Where the point goes. Row B is two points and the second one is paid for comprehension, not for arithmetic. The guidelines put an essay that uses all three sources with moderate misinterpretation at one point, so « la Source 1 s’oppose au quota », when the singer objects only to the way stations fill it, costs the point after you have already done the hard part of getting the audio into the essay.
3Justify
Every citation needs the sentence that makes it work for the position. « Ces trois constats se rejoignent : le quota protège la chanson francophone là où il s’applique, mais il s’applique à un support que les jeunes ont largement quitté. C’est donc son périmètre, et non son principe, qu’il faut revoir. »
Where the point goes. Row C is the row where an accurate essay can score nothing at all. Reporting the three sources faithfully and never attaching a claim to them is scored as repeating provided information without explanation, which is the zero band and not a consolation point. The row opens at one only once claims are on the page, and it pays two when each claim is explained with the evidence behind it.
4Structure
Build the paragraphs on your claims, not on the running order of the sources, and use connectors that carry the argument forward. « D’une part, le quota a bien maintenu la chanson francophone à l’antenne. En revanche, il ne suit pas les jeunes auditeurs là où ils écoutent. C’est pourquoi il faut l’étendre, et non le supprimer. » Then close on the position rather than on the last piece of evidence.
Where the point goes. Row D marks the shape of the essay, separately from the French inside it, and the shape most candidates arrive with is capped there. Three paragraphs, one per source, is named in the one-point band whatever the argument inside them is worth, and the two-point band also expects an introduction and a conclusion, so an essay that simply stops when the evidence runs out leaves the row at one.

AP exams are reported on a 1 to 5 scale. Your raw marks from both sections are combined using the published weightings, then converted to the final score. There is no penalty for a wrong or blank multiple-choice answer, so leaving one blank is never correct strategy. Scores are usually released in early July, and College Board publishes the exact 2027 score-access dates in spring 2027.
