Where the marks actually are
AP Latin skill weights, and what that means for your plan.
Reading and comprehending Latin is 70% of the exam, analysis is 19%, and style and context is 11%. Fluency buys more marks than commentary, so summarising and translating, roughly half the paper between them, are where a fixed hour returns the most.

Syllabus order is not exam order, so Sia weights your study days by what each skill is worth rather than by when it is taught. College Board publishes no exam weight for the six units of this course, only a weight for each skill, and it publishes those as ranges inside each skill category, so the rows do not sum to 100%. A closed reading list
You are told in advance exactly what you will be asked to read.
The syllabus is a fixed list of texts, published years ahead. That makes this one of the most plannable AP exams and the easiest to underestimate, because knowing the list is not the same as being able to place an unlabelled excerpt inside the work it came from.
The closed list is drilled to placement, not to recall
Recognising an excerpt is the starting point. The exam asks you to situate it: which work, which period, and how the theme develops across the whole text.
Sight passages are practised as unfamiliarity
Part of the paper uses text that is deliberately not on the list. The transferable skill is a reading procedure, so it is rehearsed on material you have not seen.
Accuracy beats elegance
The rubric rewards fidelity to the original. Sia marks against what the source actually says rather than how well the English or the analysis reads.

Translation, literal accuracy
Question 2 on this paper is a translation, and it is marked segment by segment rather than by overall impression. The Latin below is original AskSia writing in the manner of Pliny's letters, at the length and the difficulty of an exam passage. Pliny is writing to a friend from his Tuscan estate.
Cum in Tuscos meos venissem, tanta erat quies ut nihil aliud audirem quam aquae murmur. Itaque, omnibus negotiis remotis, totum diem studiis dedi, ne quid temporis periret; nam mihi persuasi nusquam animum melius ali quam in silvis.
Translate the passage into English as literally as possible, accounting for every word in the Latin.

1Cum clause
Cum governs the pluperfect subjunctive venissem, and tanta … ut opens a result clause, so the first sentence is “When I had come to my Tuscan estate, so great was the quiet that I heard nothing other than the murmur of the water.” nihil aliud … quam has to travel together as “nothing other than”.
Where the point goes. The accusative Tuscos rules out the preposition, because cum takes the ablative, so “with my Tuscan estate” loses the segment before the sentence starts. Putting a modal on audirem, “that I might hear nothing”, loses another: a result clause reports what actually happened and is translated as an English indicative.
2Ablative absolute
omnibus negotiis remotis is an ablative absolute, a perfect passive participle agreeing with its noun, so “with all business set aside”. The main clause then reads “And so I gave the whole day to studies”, with studiis as the dative after dedi.
Where the point goes. The phrase has no subject of its own and no finite verb. Promoting it to a main clause, “I set aside all my business and gave the whole day to study”, reads fluently and still loses the segment, because the marker is checking that the construction was recognised, not that the English carries roughly the same sense.
3Purpose clause
ne quid temporis periret is a negative purpose clause: “so that no part of the time should be lost”. After ne, quid is the indefinite “any”, and temporis is a partitive genitive depending on it.
Where the point goes. quid here is not the interrogative “what”. The tidy-looking “so that time would not be lost” leaves quid and temporis with nothing to answer to in the English, and a segment scored for literal accuracy counts the words you did not render, not the ones you did.
4Indirect statement
mihi persuasi is “I have persuaded myself”, and it introduces an indirect statement in which animum is the accusative subject and ali the present passive infinitive of alo. The clause finishes “for I have persuaded myself that the mind is nowhere better nourished than in the woods.”
Where the point goes. The accusative is the subject of the infinitive, not the object of the verb. “I persuaded my mind” takes animum as the object of persuasi, a verb that governs the dative of the person, and “that the mind nourishes better” makes a passive infinitive active. Either reading collapses the construction and every segment inside it goes with it.

AP exams are reported on a 1 to 5 scale. Your raw marks from both sections are combined using the published weightings, then converted to the final score. There is no penalty for a wrong or blank multiple-choice answer, so leaving one blank is never correct strategy. Scores are usually released in early July, and College Board publishes the exact 2027 score-access dates in spring 2027.
