Where the marks actually are

AP Physics C: Mechanics unit weights, and what that means for your plan.

Force and energy, Units 2 and 3, are 35 to 50% of the multiple-choice section between them. Kinematics takes most of September and is worth 10 to 15%, while rotation, Units 5 and 6, carries another 20 to 30% and is taught last, when a Physics C class is most likely to run short of time.

Unit 1: Kinematics
10-15%
Unit 2: Force and translational dynamics
20-25%
Unit 3: Work, energy and power
15-25%
Unit 4: Linear momentum
10-20%
Unit 5: Torque and rotational dynamics
10-15%
Unit 6: Energy and momentum of rotating systems
10-15%
Unit 7: Oscillations
10-15%
Heaviest units. Where a fixed hour returns the most marks. Published unit weight, as a share of the multiple-choice section score.

Syllabus order is not exam order, so Sia weights your study days by what each unit is worth rather than by when it is taught. College Board publishes unit weights as ranges, so they do not sum to 100%. It publishes these weights for the multiple-choice section, which is half the exam score, and the four free-response questions are defined by question type rather than by unit. Weights are taken from the published Course and Exam Description and can change between years. Last reviewed 27 August 2026.

How the Physics C Mech agent works

From unknown starting point to a plan you can follow.

Three steps turn your current standing, your target and one fixed exam date into a plan that changes as you improve. It takes about three minutes and it is free.

Physics C Mech prep in AskSia, step 1: diagnose which units are actually at risk
Step 1

Diagnose which units are actually at risk

Take a short diagnostic. Sia returns an AP score range and shows which of the 7 units are losing you marks, rather than which ones feel hard.

Physics C Mech prep in AskSia, step 2: build backwards from 3 may 2027
Step 2

Build backwards from 3 May 2027

Choose your target score. Sia assigns every study day between now and exam day, weighted by published unit exam weights rather than by syllabus order.

Physics C Mech prep in AskSia, step 3: practise, get marked, and re-plan
Step 3

Practise, get marked, and re-plan

Work exam-format multiple choice and free response. Every miss produces coaching on the specific trap or the specific rubric point, then tomorrow's plan changes around it.

The loop runs after every session
  • Sia measures which skills and traps cost you points.
  • Your live score forecast moves with the evidence.
  • The next study block is rewritten around what changed.
Experimental design

The marks are for the design, not the science.

Every free-response set includes a task that hands you a scenario and asks you to design or critique an investigation. The rubric wants a control, an identified variable, a prediction and a reason. A beautifully accurate description of the underlying physics earns none of those points.

Design questions are drilled as a fixed template

Control, independent variable, dependent variable, prediction, justification. Sia checks each slot explicitly rather than marking the answer as a whole.

Data tasks are a separate skill

Reading a graph, calculating with units and stating a trend with a reason are marks that do not require knowing the topic. They are the cheapest points on the paper and they are drilled first.

Explanations have to reach the mechanism

The exam repeatedly asks why. Sia flags answers that stop at what happens without saying how, which is the most common way a correct answer scores partial marks.

Marking follows the published rubric structure. It is AskSia's, not College Board's, and is a study aid rather than an official score.
A worked question

What a marked answer actually looks like.

One question in the AP Physics C: Mechanics free-response format, worked through the way the rubric reads it, with the point that goes missing flagged at each step.

Free response, mathematical routines

A sphere of mass m = 0.250 kg is released from rest at the surface of a deep tank of oil and sinks. While it sinks the oil exerts a resistive force on the sphere of magnitude F = bv, directed opposite to the sphere's velocity, where b = 0.500 kg/s and v is the sphere's speed. Buoyant forces are negligible. Take g = 9.8 m/s2.

(a) Derive an expression for the speed of the sphere as a function of the time t since release, in terms of m, b, g and t. (b) Calculate the terminal speed of the sphere. (c) Calculate the time at which the sphere is moving at 90% of its terminal speed.

Unit 2: Force and translational dynamics. Written by AskSia in the published free-response format. This is not a College Board question, and AskSia does not reproduce official questions or past papers.

1Newton's second law
Take down as positive. The sphere carries its weight mg downwards and the resistive force bv upwards, so ΣF = ma becomes m(dv/dt) = mgbv.
Where the point goes. A derivation has to open with a fundamental principle or an equation from the reference information. Writing v = (mg/b)(1 − ebt/m) straight from memory forfeits the derivation points even though the expression is correct.
2Separate and integrate
The acceleration depends on v, so separate the variables: dv/(mgbv) = dt/m. Integrating both sides gives −(1/b) ln(mgbv) = t/m + C.
Where the point goes. Every kinematics equation on the reference table assumes constant acceleration, and here the acceleration shrinks as the speed grows. Reaching for v = v0 + at costs the whole question rather than one point.
3Initial condition
The sphere starts from rest, so v = 0 at t = 0 and C = −(1/b) ln(mg). Substituting back gives (mgbv)/mg = ebt/m, so v(t) = (mg/b)(1 − ebt/m).
Where the point goes. Using the release condition is its own scored line. An answer that stops at the general solution with C still in it, or that writes definite integrals without stating both limits, has not finished the derivation.
4Calculate
As t grows the exponential falls to zero, which is the same condition as dv/dt = 0, so vT = mg/b = (0.250)(9.8)/0.500 = 4.9 m/s. Setting 1 − ebt/m = 0.90 gives ebt/m = 0.10, so t = (m/b) ln 10 = (0.500 s)(2.30) = 1.15 s.
Where the point goes. Calculate asks for substituted numbers, a unit and a sensible number of significant figures. Leaving the answer symbolically as mg/b, or writing a bare 4.9 with no unit, loses the point even though the derivation above it is right.

The AP Physics C: Mechanics exam is on Monday 3 May 2027, in Session 1. Session 1 exams start at 8am local time and Session 2 at 12pm local time for most schools, including all schools in the lower 48 states, Hawaii and Washington DC. Late testing runs 17 to 21 May 2027. Your AP coordinator confirms where and when you sit it.
The exam is 3 hr long. Section I is 42 multiple-choice questions, 85 minutes, 50% of the score. Section II is 4 free-response questions, 95 minutes, 50% of the score. It is a hybrid digital exam. Scientific or graphing calculator permitted throughout. A formula sheet is provided.
AP exams are reported on a 1 to 5 scale. Your raw marks from both sections are combined using the published weightings, then converted to the final score. There is no penalty for a wrong or blank multiple-choice answer, so leaving one blank is never correct strategy. Scores are usually released in early July, and College Board publishes the exact 2027 score-access dates in spring 2027.
In practice, Calculus applied under time pressure. The physics is familiar from Physics 1; the derivatives and integrals are what cost marks. Sia identifies which of these patterns is costing you marks and drills that specific pattern rather than the topic in general.
No, and no legitimate tool has them. Official AP questions are the copyrighted property of College Board. Every AskSia question is written by AskSia to the published Course and Exam Description format, then selected for the individual student based on the skills they are losing marks on.
