AP Seminar has no units, so College Board weights the three assessment components instead, the end-of-course exam at 45%, the individual research-based essay and presentation at 35% and the team project at 20%. Both performance tasks are submitted to the AP Digital Portfolio by 30 April 2027, so 55% of your AP score is finished before you sit the exam.

Syllabus order is not exam order, so Sia weights your study days by what each assessment component is worth rather than by when it is taught. These are assessment-component weights, not unit weights. AP Seminar has no units, and College Board publishes no exam weight for any of the five big ideas in the course framework, so the three figures above are the only weights it publishes for the AP score as a whole, and they sum to 100%. It publishes further weights inside each component, stated as a share of that component, so the individual written argument is 70% of 35%, the individual research report is 50% of 20%, Part A of the exam is 30% of 45% and Part B is 70% of 45%. Deadlines before the exam
Most of the score is decided long before May.
AP Capstone is assessed mainly through work completed during the year and submitted to the AP Digital Portfolio. The deadlines land months ahead of any exam, which makes this the AP course where the calendar, not the content, is what students most often get wrong.

Short-answer questions, one source
Source A, an opinion essay on school phone policy. “Schools that ban phones only in lessons have solved nothing, and should ban them from the first bell to the last. A phone within reach is a standing invitation to check it, and the cost of a check is not the thirty seconds it takes but the several minutes of re-reading and re-orienting that follow. Those minutes are spent in the lesson even when the check happened at break. After one secondary school moved to a bell-to-bell ban its pass rate rose six percentage points in a year, and any teacher who has tried it will tell you the same.”
Question 1, 3 points. Identify the argument the author is making. Question 2, 6 points. Explain the line of reasoning, naming the claims the argument is built from and how they connect. Question 3, 6 points. Evaluate how effectively the evidence supports those claims.

1Identify
The author argues that banning phones only in lessons achieves nothing, and that the ban should therefore run from the first bell to the last. Both halves belong in the answer, because the recommendation is what the essay exists to make and the failure of the lesson-only ban is the reason given for it.
Where the point goes. Row 1 is scored on the argument as a whole, and the published guidelines grade the near misses. Stating the topic, phones in schools, is a one-point response, and giving the recommendation while leaving out the claim that lesson-only bans have solved nothing is a part omitted, which is the two-point band.
2Explain
Three claims build it. A phone within reach gets checked; the cost of a check is not the check but the several minutes of re-reading and re-orienting after it; and those minutes fall inside the lesson even when the check happened at break. The second claim revalues one check from thirty seconds to several minutes, and the third carries that enlarged cost across the bell, which is what turns a general point about attention into a reason to police break time as well.
Where the point goes. The published guidelines hold Row 2 at two of its six points for a response that identifies more than one claim but makes no reference to the connections between them. A complete and accurate list of all three claims, given in the order they appear, is still that two-point answer. Six points needs each relationship stated, including how it feeds the overall argument.
3Evaluate
Take each piece against the claim it has to carry. The recovery-cost claim does the most work in the argument and arrives with no study, figure or source behind it. The one number offered, a six percentage point rise in pass rate at a single unnamed secondary school over a single year, sets that school against its own past rather than against a school running a lesson-only ban, which is the comparison the recommendation actually needs, and a pass rate is not the attention the claim is about. The closing appeal names no teacher, no school and no count, so it puts forward nothing whose credibility can be weighed.
Where the point goes. Row 3 is the row scored under Evaluate Sources and Evidence, and the published guidelines state that a response evaluating only the sources of information, and not the specific pieces of evidence drawn from them, cannot reach six points. Writing that the school is unnamed and so cannot be trusted is a verdict on the source. The scored move is saying what those six percentage points can and cannot show about the claim they are attached to.
