Animal Body Plans, Digestion and Gas Exchange

Distal and proximal, dorsal and ventral, anterior and posterior, superior and inferior, rostral and caudal, lateral and medial must be applied from the named reference point. Transverse and longitudinal sections describe the plane of a cut, not the animal's external direction.

Dissection separates tissues where possible, uses scissors rather than scalpels in first-year biology and positions invertebrates dorsal-up but vertebrates ventral-up.
