Fitness, Adaptation and Speciation

Biological fitness combines survival and reproduction; survival without offspring does not contribute genes to the next generation. The course lists age at first reproduction, current age, survival at each age and female offspring produced at each age as fitness components. Relative fitness compares contributions within a particular population and environment rather than assigning an absolute score to a species.

An adaptation is inherited, improves survival and reproduction in a specific environment and can lose its advantage if conditions change. Genetic drift is random change in allele frequencies and can be especially strong in small populations. Species names are hypotheses that can change when new morphological, reproductive or phylogenetic evidence changes the grouping.
