Natural Selection: Darwin's Observations and Inferences

Living systems grow, metabolise, respond to stimuli, reproduce and show adaptation; the course uses viruses to test why possessing only some features is not enough. Biological organisation runs from molecules through organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems and the biosphere.

Emergent properties appear when parts interact at a higher level, so the behaviour of a whole cannot be read from an isolated component alone.
