Cloud Fundamentals and Essential Characteristics

Cloud computing is introduced here as a change in how computing resources are obtained and managed, not simply as a change of location. The useful comparison is between an on-premises model, where an organisation acquires and operates infrastructure, and a cloud model, where configurable resources are accessed as a service.

The course organises the definition through five essential characteristics: on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity and measured service. Two lecturer caveats matter. Resource pooling is challenged in practice by dedicated or bare-metal choices, while rapid elasticity often has to be designed by the customer.

Those qualifications turn a memorised list into an architecture test: for each characteristic, ask what the provider exposes, what the customer must configure, and what evidence would show that the workload actually receives the benefit.
