Presenting Results and Writing the Research Report

The presentation

Week 10 presentations are a progress check: five minutes on the proposed extension and initial results, then five minutes of questions, marked out of 50 across presentation skills, the research question, data and methods, and results with the Q&A.

The report

The report replicates a paper and extends it in 4,000 to 5,000 words.

The chapter follows the lecture's proposed structure, the anatomy of a well-built table, the principles for charts, the critical-writing questions, and how to explain why a replication differs from the original.

Where presentation and report marks sit

The presentation criteria place 20 of 50 marks on results, discussion and questions, so the clearest talks show two or three findings well and handle questions confidently.

In the report, credit follows from a motivated extension, tables built for readers rather than pasted from software, interpretation in real units, and a transparent account of the data and modelling decisions behind any gap between your replication and the original paper.

Allocating a five-minute presentation by its marks

Q [3 marks]. The presentation is marked 10 for presentation skills, 10 for the research question and hypothesis, 10 for data and methods and 20 for results, discussion and questions. What share of the marks does each part carry, and what does that imply for the talk? The practice weighting is assigned by AskSia and is not an official assessment.

  • 1The total is 10 + 10 + 10 + 20 = 50 marks.
  • 1Results and questions carry 20/50 = 40%; each other criterion carries 10/50 = 20%.
  • 1With at most three results slides advised, present a few findings clearly and prepare for questions.
Results, discussion and questions carry 40% of the presentation marks, twice any other criterion. Because the course advises no more than three results slides, the marks reward a few well-explained findings and strong answers in the question time rather than many tables.
Sia tip — Rehearse the five-minute question time as seriously as the talk; it shares the largest criterion.
Glossary

Key terms

Replication
Reproducing a paper's main findings with its data and methods, and explaining any gap.
Table Stub
The column of row labels in a table, written in words rather than variable names.
Error Bars
Marks on a chart that show the uncertainty, such as standard errors, around each estimate.
FAQ

Presenting Results and Writing the Research Report FAQ

How long should the research report be?

The course introduction sets 4,000 to 5,000 words. The report has two parts, a replication of the chosen paper's main findings and an extension of it, and the Week 7 lecture proposes a structure from introduction and literature through data, methods and both sets of results to a conclusion.

What if my replicated results differ from the original paper?

That is common, and the Week 11 lab says the course looks for your explanation of the process. Check observation counts and descriptive statistics against the paper first, then the estimation technique, and document every decision behind the gap.

What makes a good table in the report?

A heading that states what is shown, for whom and when; column headers with units; row labels in words; sensible decimals; and notes and a source. Raw software output pasted in without these is the lecture's example of what to avoid.

What should the presentation slides contain?

The suggested structure is the proposed extension, with its research questions, data and methods, followed by initial results for the replication or the extension. The course advises no more than three slides of results, because the talk lasts only five minutes.

Can I choose a paper that is not on the approved list?

Yes, as long as the course convenor approves it by Week 4 and the teaching team can obtain its data. Otherwise you choose from the approved list of papers released in Week 2.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Draft the results paragraph for your main replicated coefficient before writing anything else: the estimate with units, its significance, the comparison with the original and the decision that explains any gap. Then build one results table from your own output with a full heading, units, notes and a source, and ask a classmate whether it makes sense without the text.
