Emotions, Affective Events and Work Judgement

Define affective event

The course material gives this chapter a concrete anchor: The Week 4 readings make emotion a process linking events, appraisal and behaviour rather than a stable label attached to a worker.

That affective event anchor controls how emotion regulation is explained and how broaden-and-build theory is tested in changed practice.

Emotions, Affective Events and Work Judgement frames a decision through affective event, emotion regulation and broaden-and-build theory.

The objective is to trace an event through emotional appraisal and regulation to a work judgement or interaction, so the chapter should be read as a chain from problem definition to evidence, option comparison and accountable action.

Start with affective event and name the decision owner, affected stakeholders and time horizon.

The same affective event fact can matter differently across those positions, so the opening frame determines which evidence is relevant.

Use emotion regulation to explain how the present condition produces an opportunity, cost or risk.

A strong emotion regulation mechanism states what changes, for whom and through which organisational, market or institutional process.

Trace emotion regulation

Apply broaden-and-build theory when comparing options. Keep the broaden-and-build theory criteria distinct, test trade-offs and ask which assumption drives the recommendation.

A score or matrix helps only when its criteria are justified by the case.

For the application — trace an event through emotional appraisal and regulation to a work judgement or interaction — finish with an actor, action, rationale and review trigger. This turns the broaden-and-build theory analysis into a recommendation while keeping the decision open to new evidence.

Build a decision ledger.

Separate the current condition, the stakeholder affected, the evidence supporting affective event, the mechanism represented by emotion regulation and the criterion supplied by broaden-and-build theory.

If a broaden-and-build theory recommendation cannot point back to one of those entries, it is probably preference dressed as analysis rather than a consequence of the case.

Compare at least two feasible options against the same criteria. State who benefits under broaden-and-build theory, who bears cost or risk, what capability implementation requires and what evidence would reveal failure.

This comparison is essential when students need to trace an event through emotional appraisal and regulation to a work judgement or interaction, because an attractive option is not defensible until its trade-offs are visible.

Test with broaden-and-build theory

Rehearse the MGMT8003 affective event response as a short briefing: one sentence for the decision, two for the evidence and mechanism, one for the alternative and one for the qualified recommendation.

Then expand only the emotion regulation move that needs more support. This protects the argument structure under a strict word or time limit.

A complete response should make the task visible before the detail: identify what must be decided, define the relevant terms, connect the evidence to emotion regulation, and use broaden-and-build theory to test the result.

The final sentence about broaden-and-build theory should answer the question actually asked rather than merely repeat the topic.

The controlling limit is specific: Reported emotion, displayed emotion and inferred emotion are different evidence, and positive affect does not remove situational constraints.

Keep that broaden-and-build theory limit beside the worked example, because it separates a careful MGMT8003 answer from one that sounds confident but claims more than the task or evidence supports.

For revision, retrieve affective event, emotion regulation and broaden-and-build theory without notes, explain their relationship aloud, then complete a changed version of the application: trace an event through emotional appraisal and regulation to a work judgement or interaction.

Record the first failed emotion regulation reasoning move and repair it before attempting another case.

AskSia practice: apply Emotions, Affective Events and Work Judgement

Q [4 marks]. AskSia-authored four-point reasoning drill: how should a student trace an event through emotional appraisal and regulation to a work judgement or interaction? This is not a University question or marking scheme.
  • 1Define affective event in the scenario.
  • 1Explain the mechanism using emotion regulation.
  • 1Test the conclusion with broaden-and-build theory.
  • 1State a qualified decision and review signal.
A strong response identifies the relevant evidence, uses emotion regulation as the explanatory link and tests the recommendation through broaden-and-build theory. It ends by stating that reported emotion, displayed emotion and inferred emotion are different evidence, and positive affect does not remove situational constraints.
Glossary

Key terms

affective event
A workplace occurrence that produces an emotional reaction capable of influencing attitudes and behaviour. Use this definition when the task is to trace an event through emotional appraisal and regulation to a work judgement or interaction.
emotion regulation
The processes through which people influence which emotions they experience, express or suppress. Use this definition when the task is to trace an event through emotional appraisal and regulation to a work judgement or interaction.
broaden-and-build theory
A theory proposing that positive emotions broaden momentary thought-action repertoires and help build durable resources. Use this definition when the task is to trace an event through emotional appraisal and regulation to a work judgement or interaction.
FAQ

Emotions, Affective Events and Work Judgement FAQ

What is the main task in Emotions, Affective Events and Work Judgement?

Trace an event through emotional appraisal and regulation to a work judgement or interaction.

How do affective event and emotion regulation work together?

Use affective event to establish the object or condition, then use emotion regulation to explain how it changes the outcome being analysed.

What must a MGMT8003 answer qualify here?

Reported emotion, displayed emotion and inferred emotion are different evidence, and positive affect does not remove situational constraints.

How should I revise Emotions, Affective Events and Work Judgement?

Retrieve affective event, emotion regulation and broaden-and-build theory, apply them to a changed case, and correct the first point where the evidence no longer supports the conclusion.

Study strategy

Exam move

Reconstruct the relationship among affective event, emotion regulation and broaden-and-build theory; complete the chapter application without notes; then test the result against this limit: Reported emotion, displayed emotion and inferred emotion are different evidence, and positive affect does not remove situational constraints.
