PSYC1005 Chap.10 Positive Body Image
Positive Body Image
Positive body image is not simply the absence of body dissatisfaction. Following Tylka and Wood-Barcalow’s 2015 paper, this chapter sets out its six facets, body appreciation, acceptance and love, a broad view of beauty, adaptive appearance investment, inner positivity and protective filtering, each against what it is not.
It shows why positive and negative body image are separate constructs, with overlaps from 19% to 53% in different samples, how the facets work holistically, and evidence that positive body image is malleable and protective, including an experiment with media images. It ends with body functionality, a public campaign and links to self-compassion.

Positive Body Image FAQ
Is positive body image just low body dissatisfaction?
No. Tylka and Wood-Barcalow show the two are separate constructs rather than ends of one line. Body appreciation and dissatisfaction shared only 19% of their variance among older adolescent African American girls and about 41% to 53% in mainly Caucasian college samples, and people can hold some dissatisfaction while appreciating their bodies.
What are the facets of positive body image?
The paper names six: body appreciation; body acceptance and love; a broad conceptualisation of beauty; adaptive appearance investment; inner positivity; and filtering information in a body-protective manner. It adds that positive body image is holistic, stable yet malleable, protective, linked to feeling accepted by others and shaped by social identities.
Can positive body image be improved?
Yes. It has both trait and state qualities. Adult women given self-compassion meditation training gained more in body appreciation than a waitlist group, and secondary school girls in the United Kingdom improved after a dissonance-based programme while a control group did not. These findings support its malleability.
How does positive body image protect people?
In Halliwell’s experiment, women low in body appreciation reported larger gaps between their ideal and actual appearance after viewing thin models, but women high in body appreciation did not, matching a control group. The protection held even for women who had internalised the thin ideal, who downplayed the gap.
What is body functionality and why does it matter?
Body functionality is everything the body can do. The course presents a focus on functionality, together with celebrating body diversity, as a practical route to positive body image, using the This Girl Can campaign from Sport England as an example aimed at increasing physical activity among girls and women.
Is positive body image the same as vanity?
No. The paper says body acceptance and love is not narcissism or vanity: focusing on matching cultural ideals or looking more attractive than others would be. Inner positivity is not vain either. Positive body image values the body’s abilities and accepts features that differ from ideals.
Exam move
Learn the six facets with a what-it-is-not for each, because the contrast is the most testable part of the paper. Memorise the seven features in the abstract as a list. Know the overlap figures well enough to argue that positive and negative body image are distinct, and rehearse the Halliwell experiment as evidence that body appreciation protects.
Link the topic to self-compassion and to self-worth based on shape and weight from Week 7.
