Assessment Map and Strategic Fit

Assessment Map and Strategic Fit frames a decision through 30/30/40 structure, strategic fit and case evidence.

The objective is to align the problem, analytical level and recommendation before choosing a framework, so the chapter should be read as a chain from problem definition to evidence, option comparison and accountable action.

Start with 30/30/40 structure and name the decision owner, affected stakeholders and time horizon.

The same fact can matter differently across those positions, so the opening frame determines which evidence is relevant.

Use strategic fit to explain how the present condition produces an opportunity, cost or risk. A strong mechanism states what changes, for whom and through which organisational, market or institutional process.

Apply case evidence when comparing options.

Keep criteria distinct, test trade-offs and ask which assumption drives the recommendation. A score or matrix only helps when its criteria are justified by the case.

For the application — align the problem, analytical level and recommendation before choosing a framework — finish with an actor, action, rationale and review trigger.

This turns analysis into a recommendation while keeping the decision open to new evidence.

Build a decision ledger for Assessment Map and Strategic Fit. Separate the current condition, the stakeholder affected, the evidence supporting 30/30/40 structure, the mechanism represented by strategic fit and the criterion supplied by case evidence.

If a recommendation cannot point back to one of those entries, it is probably preference dressed as analysis rather than a consequence of the case.

Compare at least two feasible options against the same criteria. State who benefits, who bears cost or risk, what capability implementation requires and what evidence would reveal failure.

This comparison is essential when students need to align the problem, analytical level and recommendation before choosing a framework, because an attractive option is not yet a defensible choice until its trade-offs are made visible.

Rehearse the MGMT8012 response as a short briefing: one sentence for the decision, two for the evidence and mechanism, one for the alternative and one for the qualified recommendation.

Then expand only the move that needs more support. This protects the argument structure when a report, presentation or timed case imposes a strict word or time limit.

A complete Assessment Map and Strategic Fit response should make the task visible before the detail: identify what must be decided, define the relevant terms, connect the evidence to strategic fit, and use case evidence to test the result.

The final sentence should answer the question actually asked rather than merely repeat the topic.

The controlling limit is specific: Current s2 task and exam instructions override earlier teaching-slide details.

Keep that limit beside the worked example, because it separates a careful MGMT8012 answer from one that sounds confident but claims more than the task or evidence supports.

For revision, retrieve 30/30/40 structure, strategic fit and case evidence without notes, explain their relationship aloud, then complete a changed version of the application: align the problem, analytical level and recommendation before choosing a framework.

Record the first point at which your reasoning fails and repair that move before attempting another case.

Worked example: Assessment Map and Strategic Fit

Q [4 marks]. While trying to align the problem, analytical level and recommendation before choosing a framework, a draft jumps from 30/30/40 structure directly to case evidence. Restore the missing strategic fit link and state the limit on the conclusion. This is AskSia-authored practice, not a University question or marking scheme.
  • 1Mark the starting condition or object represented by 30/30/40 structure.
  • 1Write the change, rule or mechanism supplied by strategic fit as a verb-led link.
  • 1Show how that link reaches case evidence; do not skip an intermediate actor, quantity or stage.
  • 1Answer the task with the completed chain and preserve this limit: Current s2 task and exam instructions override earlier teaching-slide details.
The completed chain begins with 30/30/40 structure, states what strategic fit changes, and only then reaches case evidence. Each arrow therefore represents a checkable mechanism rather than an association. The chain supports no broader conclusion than this boundary allows: Current s2 task and exam instructions override earlier teaching-slide details.
Sia tip — Let the current Semester 2 task or exam instruction determine the required output before selecting case evidence or a framework. Earlier teaching-slide details are context, not authority for a conflicting assessment requirement.
Glossary

Key terms

congruence / strategic fit (Waterman, Peters & Phillips 1980)
Strategic fit is the alignment among an organisation's strategy, structure, systems, skills, staff, style and shared values so the elements reinforce rather than obstruct one another. In this chapter, use the concept when you align the problem, analytical level and recommendation before choosing a framework.
strategic groups and competitor analysis
Strategic groups are clusters of firms following similar competitive approaches within an industry; competitor analysis compares their objectives, assumptions, resources and likely actions. In this chapter, use the concept when you align the problem, analytical level and recommendation before choosing a framework.
Porter's Five Forces and industry attractiveness
Porter's Five Forces judges industry attractiveness from rivalry, entry threats, substitutes, buyer power and supplier power, which together constrain average profitability. In this chapter, use the concept when you align the problem, analytical level and recommendation before choosing a framework.
FAQ

Assessment Map and Strategic Fit FAQ

What is the main task in Assessment Map and Strategic Fit?

Align the problem, analytical level and recommendation before choosing a framework.

How do 30/30/40 structure and strategic fit work together?

Use 30/30/40 structure to establish the object or condition, then use strategic fit to explain how it changes the outcome being analysed.

What must a MGMT8012 answer qualify here?

Current s2 task and exam instructions override earlier teaching-slide details.

How should I revise Assessment Map and Strategic Fit?

Retrieve 30/30/40 structure, strategic fit and case evidence, apply them to a changed case, and correct the first point where the evidence no longer supports the conclusion.
