Law, Ethics and Privacy

Define professional ethics

The course material gives this chapter a concrete anchor: The current schedule gives law, ethics and privacy three weeks, signalling that legal permission, professional responsibility and social consequence must be analysed separately.

That professional ethics anchor controls how privacy is explained and how professional responsibility is tested in changed practice.

Law, Ethics and Privacy frames a decision through professional ethics, privacy and professional responsibility.

The objective is to separate legal permission, ethical justification and privacy control in a technology scenario, so the chapter should be read as a chain from problem definition to evidence, option comparison and accountable action.

Start with professional ethics and name the decision owner, affected stakeholders and time horizon.

The same professional ethics fact can matter differently across those positions, so the opening frame determines which evidence is relevant.

Use privacy to explain how the present condition produces an opportunity, cost or risk.

A strong privacy mechanism states what changes, for whom and through which organisational, market or institutional process.

Professional ethics

In FIT5122, Professional ethics belongs with professional ethics and privacy because students use it to separate legal permission, ethical justification and privacy control in a technology scenario.

A defensible use of Professional ethics should define the term, connect it to the case evidence and test the conclusion through professional responsibility; repeating the phrase without that chain does not demonstrate understanding.

Trace privacy

Apply professional responsibility when comparing options.

Keep the professional responsibility criteria distinct, test trade-offs and ask which assumption drives the recommendation. A score or matrix helps only when its criteria are justified by the case.

For the application — separate legal permission, ethical justification and privacy control in a technology scenario — finish with an actor, action, rationale and review trigger.

This turns the professional responsibility analysis into a recommendation while keeping the decision open to new evidence.

Build a decision ledger. Separate the current condition, the stakeholder affected, the evidence supporting professional ethics, the mechanism represented by privacy and the criterion supplied by professional responsibility.

If a professional responsibility recommendation cannot point back to one of those entries, it is probably preference dressed as analysis rather than a consequence of the case.

Compare at least two feasible options against the same criteria. State who benefits under professional responsibility, who bears cost or risk, what capability implementation requires and what evidence would reveal failure.

This comparison is essential when students need to separate legal permission, ethical justification and privacy control in a technology scenario, because an attractive option is not defensible until its trade-offs are visible.

Test with professional responsibility

Rehearse the FIT5122 professional ethics response as a short briefing: one sentence for the decision, two for the evidence and mechanism, one for the alternative and one for the qualified recommendation.

Then expand only the privacy move that needs more support. This protects the argument structure under a strict word or time limit.

A complete response should make the task visible before the detail: identify what must be decided, define the relevant terms, connect the evidence to privacy, and use professional responsibility to test the result.

The final sentence about professional responsibility should answer the question actually asked rather than merely repeat the topic.

The controlling limit is specific: Legal compliance supplies a floor for conduct and does not by itself establish that an action is fair, proportionate or professionally responsible.

Keep that professional responsibility limit beside the worked example, because it separates a careful FIT5122 answer from one that sounds confident but claims more than the task or evidence supports.

For revision, retrieve professional ethics, privacy and professional responsibility without notes, explain their relationship aloud, then complete a changed version of the application: separate legal permission, ethical justification and privacy control in a technology scenario.

Record the first failed privacy reasoning move and repair it before attempting another case.

AskSia practice: apply Law, Ethics and Privacy

Q [4 marks]. AskSia-authored four-point reasoning drill: how should a student separate legal permission, ethical justification and privacy control in a technology scenario? This is not a University question or marking scheme.
  • 1Define professional ethics in the scenario.
  • 1Explain the mechanism using privacy.
  • 1Test the conclusion with professional responsibility.
  • 1State a qualified decision and review signal.
A strong response identifies the relevant evidence, uses privacy as the explanatory link and tests the recommendation through professional responsibility. It ends by stating that legal compliance supplies a floor for conduct and does not by itself establish that an action is fair, proportionate or professionally responsible.
Sia tip — The four points are AskSia-authored practice weighting only.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Reconstruct the relationship among professional ethics, privacy and professional responsibility; complete the chapter application without notes; then test the result against this limit: Legal compliance supplies a floor for conduct and does not by itself establish that an action is fair, proportionate or professionally responsible.
