Integrated Case Reasoning

Week 12 is officially TBA. This is an editorial revision chapter, not a syllabus claim.

It integrates the course-grounded chain: define decision, calculate, interpret, test assumptions, compare alternatives, recommend and control.

AskSia Library · ACCT90009 · Strategic Cost Management · University of Melbourne EDITORIAL INTEGRATION Editorial integration NOT AN OFFICIAL WEEK 12 TOPIC Week 12 is TBA — this is a revision chapter Decision, calculation, interpretation, assumptions and recommendation The current Subject Guide lists the Week 12 topic as TBA.

This chapter therefore does not invent a Week 12 content topic. It is an editorial integration tool built from the course-grounded assessment logic: cases combine quantitative and qualitative questions and reward identification, analysis, alternatives, judgement and recommendations. Use current Canvas information for whatever Week 12 ultimately covers.

Case-answer funnel Broad evidence narrows into a decision, a relevant model, interpretation and an implementable recommendation. Original signature schematic.

The decision is the organising sentence Write alternatives, horizon and objective before formulas. Then select only techniques that answer the choice. A long calculation that never changes an alternative is evidence without purpose.

Recommendation is conditional State the choice, quantified advantage or range, decisive assumption, qualitative risks, implementation and feedback. Good judgement is explicit about what would change the answer. ! Do not call this the Week 12 syllabus It is a revision architecture because the official topic remains TBA. Confirm late-semester content and exam details in current course channels.

A case answer becomes strategic when the calculation changes or defends an action. Integration principle {PG} · asksia.ai/explore AskSia Library · ACCT90009 · Strategic Cost

Management · University of Melbourne CASE TRIAGE Case triage Facts, decisions, constraints and missing evidence Read before calculating First read for the required action, then for evidence.

Mark facts that define alternatives, cost behaviour, capacity, customer value, quality and time. Separate hard constraints from assumptions. Note conflicts and missing data. Do not force every number into a formula; some figures establish context or test credibility. Case element Question Decision What must management choose now? Alternative What is the credible comparator? Horizon Which resources can change?

Objective Profit, cash, value, risk or capability? Constraint Capacity, quality, contract, compliance? Evidence Fact, estimate or managerial claim? Gap What uncertainty can reverse the choice? Build a fact ledger Label

each important item measured, estimated or assumed. This prevents a forecast from being treated as historical fact and directs sensitivity to weak evidence.

Translate narrative into relationships “Complex customers need support” becomes driver, demand and avoidability questions. “Automation saves labour” becomes hours, release mechanism, fixed step and quality questions. Translation is where accounting technique enters. P12.1 Triage Answer included A case asks whether to outsource but gives book value. First response? Answer.

Define alternatives/horizon; classify book value as sunk unless tax/disposal effects differ. P12.2 Constraint Answer included Cheaper alternative fails a safety standard. Keep comparing? Answer. No as presented; compliance is a constraint unless the alternative can be redesigned.

ACCT90009 · Strategic Cost Management · University of Melbourne MODEL SELECTION Model selection Choose the smallest technique that resolves the choice Cost behaviour, job/ABC/process, CVP, relevance and budgets Integrated evidence map A strategic recommendation combines future resource economics with customer value, quality/time and capacity/risk evidence. Original schematic.

Technique follows the question. Estimate a cost function when activity response is unknown; use job or ABC detail when object consumption matters; process costing for homogeneous flow; CVP for volume thresholds; relevant costing for alternatives; flexible budgets for performance at actual activity. Combining tools is justified when each answers a distinct link. Question Primary tool Second check What will cost at new volume?

Behaviour/estimation Relevant range/capacity Which object

consumes support? Job/ABC Avoidability What does incomplete output cost? Process costing Flow/quality What volume reaches target? CVP Demand/capacity Which alternative? Relevant cost Risk/implementation Why did performance differ? Flexible bridge Driver/quality Do not stack formulas for display Every schedule should lead to a sentence about the decision.

If two methods answer the same question, select the clearer one or reconcile why they differ. Use a threshold Solve volume, price, failure rate or opportunity benefit that makes alternatives equal. Compare with evidence. The threshold turns uncertainty into judgement. ✓ Model map Write one line per technique: input → output → decision use → limitation. This prevents duplicate work and exposes missing evidence.

· ACCT90009 · Strategic Cost Management · University of Melbourne INTEGRATED CASE Integrated worked case Two fulfilment designs Original scenario structure; AskSia-authored practice weighting omitted EX 12.1 Recommend a design under cost, defect and time uncertainty Scenario.

A manager compares a flexible manual fulfilment design with an automated design carrying higher fixed cost, lower unit handling cost, a different defect rate and shorter lead time. Demand is uncertain. Model response. Define the horizon and feasible capacity. Build total relevant cost for each design and solve crossover volume: incremental fixed cost divided by unit-cost saving.

Add expected defect cost using credible failure probability and consequence, then quantify lead-time value only where evidence exists. Stress-test demand and

defect rates together. If expected volume sits well above crossover and quality/implementation evidence supports automation, recommend a staged rollout with service and defect guardrails.

If volume sits near crossover, preserve flexibility through a pilot or modular contract. Exclude sunk design research; include transition, training and
