DPHU1003 Chap.3 Hard News Structure and Style
Hard News Structure and Style
Hard news orders information by importance rather than by the sequence in which events occurred or facts were discovered. The inverted pyramid protects the central development at the top, then adds essential detail, authoritative quotation, explanation and background. Each paragraph should perform one clear role and remain editable.
Direct quotation preserves exact, distinctive words with attribution; indirect quotation paraphrases meaning accurately without quotation marks. Neutral style distinguishes verified fact, attributed claim and the reporter's inference. A final paragraph can look forward to the next verified step without becoming an essay conclusion.
Application test. The closure leads because it changes access now.
Alternative arrangements follow because they are immediately useful. The damaged pipe is attributed as the current explanation, and the expected repair update closes the item by identifying what may change next. Reduce every paragraph to a role label. Reorder the labels before polishing sentences so chronology does not quietly control importance.
What this chapter covers
- 01
Inverted pyramid: An ordering method that places the most important verified material first and expendable detail last.
- 02
Direct quotation: A source's exact distinctive words reproduced in quotation marks with clear attribution.
- 03
Indirect quotation: An accurate paraphrase of a source's meaning presented without quotation marks.
- 04
Neutral style: Language that separates observation, verified fact, allegation and attributed interpretation.
- 05
Throw forward: A closing move that identifies the next expected development rather than supplying an essay conclusion.
- 06
Paragraph priority: The relative importance of a paragraph to understanding the central news development.
Reorder a chronology for publication
- +1The marks shown here are not a published university assessment scheme. Lead with the verified closure and the audience affected, not the time when staff first saw the pipe.
- +1Use paragraph two for alternative services because readers need an immediate practical response.
- +1Attribute the damaged pipe explanation to the centre and distinguish the current finding from the repair forecast.
- +1Close with the expected repair update because it throws the story forward and may change access tomorrow.

Hard News Structure and Style FAQ
Why is chronology often weak for hard news?
Chronology reflects when events occurred, not what readers most need to know. A later decision may be the central development. Hard-news ordering foregrounds consequence and verification, then uses chronology only where sequence explains cause or responsibility.
When should I use a direct quotation?
Choose exact words when their phrasing supplies authority, explanation, emotion or accountable judgment that paraphrase would flatten. Do not use quotation marks merely to repeat a fact already stated more clearly in the reporter's voice.
What makes a paragraph radically editable?
It performs one recognisable role and does not depend on a hidden transition from the previous paragraph. An editor can move or remove it without changing the truth of the lead or leaving a pronoun, chronology or causal claim unexplained.
How should a news story end?
Finish with a verified next step, an attributed quotation that deepens the angle or the current status of an inquiry. Avoid an essay-style conclusion that moralises, repeats the lead or announces what the event proves.
Can background information ever appear near the top?
Yes, when readers cannot understand the central development without it. Keep only the minimum background needed to interpret the event, then return to current evidence. Historical colour that merely adds interest belongs lower or outside the story.
Assessment move
Print a draft and label every paragraph with one role: focal development, practical detail, evidence, quote, context, cause, effect or next step. Read only the labels to see whether importance declines coherently. Cut the bottom paragraph and ask whether the story still works; repeat until removing another paragraph would damage the central account.
For quotation practice, turn one source answer into direct and indirect forms, checking that both preserve meaning and procedural status. Add a final verification pass in which you explain the weakest evidentiary link to another student, identify the exact wording it affects and name the next source or editing action that would strengthen it. Final synthesis: The closure leads because it changes access now.
Alternative arrangements follow because they are immediately useful. The damaged pipe is attributed as the current explanation, and the expected repair update closes the item by identifying what may change next.
