What PSYC1011 covers

A scientific psychological argument begins with a construct and an operational definition. It identifies the design, comparison and outcome, then states what pattern the proposed mechanism predicts.

Causal claims require manipulation and control adequate to address alternatives. Correlational evidence can describe relation and prediction but does not decide direction or exclude a third variable by itself.

Cognition and attention show why task performance is not self-interpreting. Response time, accuracy and confidence reflect processing plus decision criteria and trade-offs.

Memory adds encoding, retention, retrieval cues and reconstruction. A failure to recall can arise from several stages, while the feeling of fluency can diverge from durable unaided retrieval.

Animal learning makes prediction depend on contingencies among cues, responses and outcomes. Classical conditioning concerns predictive cue–outcome relations; operant learning concerns response–consequence relations.

Reinforcement and punishment are defined by future behavioural change. Extinction changes a relation but may not erase the original learning, so context can produce recovery.

Psychobiology links cellular signalling and interacting systems to behaviour. Evidence from lesions, stimulation, recording and imaging supports different inferences.

An activated region is not a complete explanation, and a localised deficit does not mean the region contains the whole function. Converging methods and preserved abilities sharpen the claim.

Perception combines transduction, sensory constraints, organisation, context and criterion. Signal detection separates sensitivity from willingness to report a signal.

Illusions reveal assumptions used by a normally useful inferential system rather than proving that perception is globally defective.

Abnormal psychology distinguishes descriptive criteria, diagnostic reliability, causal explanation and treatment efficacy. Biological, psychological and social factors should be linked through mechanisms, not listed as three independent headings.

A diagnosis can guide communication without identifying one cause or guaranteeing one response.

The research summary and essay reward evidence communication. A useful paragraph makes a claim, presents relevant evidence, explains how design supports the claim, evaluates a limitation that changes inference and returns to the argument.

Synthesis compares evidence around a question rather than reporting one article after another.

The group presentation adds audience, shared structure and spoken clarity. Define terms, distinguish evidence from example and avoid diagnosing unassessed people. The exam requires rapid discrimination among concepts, predictions and design limits.

Retrieval practice and changed-case questions therefore prepare both content knowledge and application.
