Psychology as a Science

Week 1 of UNSW PSYC1024 Anxiety, Mood and Stress sets the foundation: who actually does psychology — the differences between a psychologist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, psychological scientist, social worker and counsellor, including AHPRA registration and legally protected titles — and how the scientific method underpins evidence-based practice. This is core mid-term material: the 20% mid-term draws only on Weeks 1–2 & 4–5, and definitional questions about the professions and the scientific method are exactly the kind of application-style multiple-choice items that appear on both the Moodle mid-term and the Inspera final.

Design a controlled experiment and label its parts

Q [4 marks]. A researcher wants to know: does upbeat, fast-tempo background music make people walk faster? Design a simple controlled experiment. Name the operational definition, the independent and dependent variables, the control condition, and state how you would interpret a positive result. (4 marks)
  • +1Operationalise the abstract variable. "Walking speed" must be defined by how it is measured so it is unambiguous: e.g. steps per minute recorded over a fixed 20 m corridor. Check the definition is observable (you can record it), objective (no interpretation needed), replicable (any researcher could repeat it) and valid (it really captures walking speed).
  • +1Independent variable (IV) = the variable you manipulate, the grouping variable: music tempo (a fast-tempo track vs the control condition). It is what defines the groups.
  • +1Dependent variable (DV) = the variable you measure, whose value depends on the IV: walking speed (steps/min). Mnemonic: how much DV a participant shows depends on which IV condition they were in.
  • +1Control condition and interpretation. Give the control group the same walk with no music (or a neutral track) so any effect is not due to simply wearing headphones or walking the corridor. Randomly assign participants to experimental vs control groups, run a statistical test, and if the fast-tempo group walks significantly faster the result supports (never "proves") the hypothesis — and raises new questions, so the cycle continues.
Operational definition: walking speed = steps/min over a fixed 20 m corridor (observable, objective, replicable, valid). IV = music tempo (fast vs control); DV = walking speed. Control condition = the same walk with no music, so the effect is not driven by a confound (headphones, the corridor). Randomly assign to experimental vs control groups, test statistically, and a significant difference supports — not proves — the hypothesis.
Sia tip — The two marks students drop most are (1) reversing IV and DV — the IV is manipulated, the DV is measured — and (2) writing that a result "proves" the hypothesis. Key terms

Theory (scientific sense)
Not a hunch. A detailed explanation of how and why a phenomenon occurs, built on prior observations, that makes predictions about future situations. Contrast the everyday use of "theory" = guess.
Hypothesis
A single, specific, testable prediction about what will happen in your particular study. A theory makes a broad range of predictions; a hypothesis is one of them, framed so a single experiment can support or refute it.
Falsifiability
For an idea to be scientific it must be investigable in a way that could show it wrong. Ideas impossible to refute (e.g. "we live in a simulation") are not falsifiable and lie outside science.
Operational definition
A definition of a variable in terms of exactly how it is measured, so it is unambiguous. A good one is observable, objective, replicable and valid (it captures the construct you intend, not something else).
Independent vs dependent variable
The independent variable (IV) is manipulated by the experimenter (the grouping variable); the dependent variable (DV) is measured and its value depends on the IV. A control condition holds everything else constant so the IV is the only thing that differs.
AHPRA registration / protected title
To practise as a psychologist in Australia you must register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); "psychologist" is a legally protected title. Registration protects consumers by enforcing competency standards, a code of ethics and a complaints avenue. "Counsellor"/"therapist" are not protected titles — anyone can use them.

Psychology as a Science FAQ

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who then specialises in mental health, so they can prescribe medication; a psychologist completes psychology training and registration and delivers evidence-based psychological therapy but cannot prescribe. A clinical psychologist is a psychologist who has done additional specialist (clinical) training plus supervised practice, while a psychological scientist is a researcher rather than a clinician. These distinctions are classic mid-term multiple-choice material.

Can science prove a theory is true?

No — the scientific method cannot prove anything to absolute certainty. Science advances by disproving incorrect ideas so only the most accurate survive; a theory gains support when many researchers try and fail to disprove it. That is why advertising claims of "scientifically proven" are misleading, and why in the exam you should never write that a result "proves" a hypothesis — it supports or refutes it.

Is "psychologist" a protected title in Australia?

Yes. "Psychologist" (and "clinical psychologist", "psychiatrist") are legally protected — you can only use them after the required training and registration with AHPRA. "Counsellor", "therapist" and "psychotherapist" describe a type of work, not a protected profession, so anyone can use them, trained or not. You verify a registered psychologist via the AHPRA Register of Practitioners.

Week 1 is pure definitional precision, and it is mid-term examinable, so make a comparison table of the six roles (psychologist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, psychological scientist, social worker, counsellor) across the dimensions that actually separate them: protected title or not, registration body (AHPRA vs AASW), who can prescribe, and researcher vs clinician. For the scientific method, be able to write the cycle in order and to explain, in one line each, falsifiability, why science never "proves", and the difference between a theory and a hypothesis.
