Theories of Emotion
Still Week 2, this chapter is the core examinable structure of the emotion block: the four families of emotion theory — functional/evolutionary, motivational, cognitive-appraisal and constructionist — and the two ways of classifying emotions, the discrete (categorical) approach vs the dimensional (valence–arousal) approach. Map one ambiguous-threat scenario onto all four emotion theories
- +1Functional/evolutionary. The rustle triggers a rapid, adaptive cascade — physiology, behaviour, attention — that maximises the hiker's chance of survival. The emotional cognition interrupts whatever they were thinking (now inappropriate) and redirects attention, memory and judgement toward the possible threat.

A possible predator is high in avoidance/withdrawal motivation, and high motivational intensity narrows cognitive scope — the hiker zeroes in on the bush rather than taking in the whole scene — which is adaptive for escaping the goal.

The brain constructs the emotion by integrating exteroceptive input (the sound, the fading light), proprioceptive input (frozen mid-step) and interoceptive input (pounding heart), comparing this array against past similar situations and their consequences to infer (1) what caused it and (2) what to do. - Constructionist theory
- The view that emotion is a dynamic state the brain constructs, with cognition part of it rather than after it. The brain integrates exteroceptive, proprioceptive and interoceptive input against past experience to infer cause and action; wrong predictions (prediction error) drive learning.
- Motivational intensity & cognitive scope
- Cognitive scope is the level of detail we attend to — narrow (local) vs broad (global). The updated finding (Gable & Harmon-Jones, 2008) is that motivational intensity, not valence or direction, drives scope: high intensity narrows it, low intensity broadens it.
