Ethics, Inclusion and Harm in Games

Define game ethics

Ethics, Inclusion and Harm in Games asks how game ethics, inclusive design and harassment governance change the interpretation of a text, case, institution or public problem.

The chapter's practical task is to evaluate a design or governance choice by affected groups, foreseeable harms, agency and accountability; that requires an argument, not a list of themes.

Define game ethics at the scale of the chosen case. Identify who uses the category, what it makes visible and what it may conceal.

This prevents the game ethics definition from floating above the evidence as an interchangeable opening paragraph.

Use inclusive design to explain the relationship between the case and the claim.

Quote, describe or compare only the evidence that advances inclusive design, and make the inferential step visible instead of assuming the example speaks for itself.

Bring harassment governance in as a second lens or consequence. The harassment governance reading may deepen the first account, expose a conflict or show why another audience would interpret the same material differently.

The comparison should change the conclusion, not simply add another term.

Trace inclusive design

To evaluate a design or governance choice by affected groups, foreseeable harms, agency and accountability, build each paragraph around one contested move: claim, specific evidence, explanation and qualification.

A harassment governance counter-reading is strongest when it identifies exactly which premise or piece of evidence it changes.

Make an game ethics evidence table with four columns: passage, image, event or institutional fact; the concept it activates; the inference drawn; and a plausible competing reading. Place game ethics and inclusive design in separate rows before combining them.

This keeps inclusive design interpretation anchored in specific material and shows where disagreement enters the argument.

Test the scale of every claim. An game ethics detail may support an argument about one text, group or moment without supporting a claim about an entire culture or institution.

Use harassment governance to decide whether the evidence should be widened, narrowed or compared with a counter-case before the paragraph reaches its conclusion.

For timed revision in ARIN6904, write a one-sentence thesis for the application — evaluate a design or governance choice by affected groups, foreseeable harms, agency and accountability — then list the minimum evidence needed to defend it.

Add one harassment governance objection that would matter if true and revise the thesis so it survives.

The exercise trains harassment governance argument selection and qualification rather than a memorised inventory of course terms.

Test with harassment governance

A complete response should make the task visible before the detail: identify what must be decided, define the relevant terms, connect the evidence to inclusive design, and use harassment governance to test the result.

The final sentence about harassment governance should answer the question actually asked rather than merely repeat the topic.

The controlling limit is specific: Ethical analysis should not reduce complex communities to individual intent or treat moderation as a purely technical fix.

Keep that harassment governance limit beside the worked example, because it separates a careful ARIN6904 answer from one that sounds confident but claims more than the task or evidence supports.

For revision, retrieve game ethics, inclusive design and harassment governance without notes, explain their relationship aloud, then complete a changed version of the application: evaluate a design or governance choice by affected groups, foreseeable harms, agency and accountability.

Record the first failed inclusive design reasoning move and repair it before attempting another case.

AskSia practice: apply Ethics, Inclusion and Harm in Games

Q [4 marks]. AskSia-authored four-point reasoning drill: how should a student evaluate a design or governance choice by affected groups, foreseeable harms, agency and accountability? This is not a University question or marking scheme.
  • 1Define game ethics in the scenario.
  • 1Explain the mechanism using inclusive design.
  • 1Test the conclusion with harassment governance.
  • 1State a qualified decision and review signal.
A strong response identifies the relevant evidence, uses inclusive design as the explanatory link and tests the recommendation through harassment governance. It ends by stating that ethical analysis should not reduce complex communities to individual intent or treat moderation as a purely technical fix.
Sia tip — The four points are AskSia-authored practice weighting only.
Glossary

Key terms

game ethics
The evaluation of game design, production and use through questions of harm, agency, fairness, responsibility and social consequence. Use this definition when the task is to evaluate a design or governance choice by affected groups, foreseeable harms, agency and accountability.
inclusive design
A design process that considers varied abilities, identities and contexts so participation is not restricted by avoidable barriers. Use this definition when the task is to evaluate a design or governance choice by affected groups, foreseeable harms, agency and accountability.
harassment governance
The rules, moderation practices and enforcement systems used to prevent and respond to abusive conduct in game communities. Use this definition when the task is to evaluate a design or governance choice by affected groups, foreseeable harms, agency and accountability.
FAQ

Ethics, Inclusion and Harm in Games FAQ

What is the main task in Ethics, Inclusion and Harm in Games?

Evaluate a design or governance choice by affected groups, foreseeable harms, agency and accountability.

How do game ethics and inclusive design work together?

Use game ethics to establish the object or condition, then use inclusive design to explain how it changes the outcome being analysed.

What must a ARIN6904 answer qualify here?

Ethical analysis should not reduce complex communities to individual intent or treat moderation as a purely technical fix.

How should I revise Ethics, Inclusion and Harm in Games?

Retrieve game ethics, inclusive design and harassment governance, apply them to a changed case, and correct the first point where the evidence no longer supports the conclusion.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Reconstruct the relationship among game ethics, inclusive design and harassment governance; complete the chapter application without notes; then test the result against this limit: Ethical analysis should not reduce complex communities to individual intent or treat moderation as a purely technical fix.
