How assessment works at University of Sydney

Where do the assessment weights on these pages come from?

From the unit of study outline for the offering each guide names at the top of the page, published by the University of Sydney two weeks before teaching starts. Topics and worked examples carry across offerings; weights, due dates and exam formats can change between semesters, so confirm yours in the current outline on Canvas.

What is a hurdle task in a University of Sydney unit?

A hurdle task is an assessment you must complete to a specified standard to pass the unit, no matter how well you do in your other assessments. The standard is set out in the unit outline and is often lower than a pass mark: some units require 30% or 40% on the final exam. Each guide names the hurdle components for the offering it was built from, but confirm the standard in your own unit outline.

What is STUVAC and when are exams?

STUVAC is the study vacation week after the last teaching week, and end of semester exams usually run straight after it in Weeks 15 and 16. In semester tests, quizzes and take home exams are set by the unit coordinator during teaching weeks. Each guide that covers a final exam says which components fall in the formal exam period.

How is a WAM calculated at the University of Sydney?

Your Weighted Average Mark averages your unit marks weighted by each unit's credit point value, and in some cases by its level of study. Failed attempts count, and you include both the failed mark and the mark when you retake the unit. A High Distinction is 85 to 100 in a unit, so the guides order revision by the components that carry the most marks.

Are these official University of Sydney materials?

No. AskSia is not affiliated with the University of Sydney. Each guide is written independently by AskSia from the unit's published materials, and every assessment figure names the offering it came from so you can check it against the unit outline.

Past exam papers at the University of Sydney

Where a University of Sydney unit releases past or sample exam papers, it does so through Canvas and the unit outline, and the unit coordinator decides what is released. AskSia guides do not host exam papers. What they give you instead is the exam format from the unit outline, broken down by question type, next to the assessment table it belongs to, plus a worked example marked step by step.
