Fire Resistance and Structural Adequacy

Fire design converts a specified exposure into member temperatures, reduced material and interface properties, and a structural adequacy check under the fire action. This chapter keeps adequacy separate from integrity and insulation, tests whether a tabulated or tested configuration matches the project, and follows fire protection through penetrations, reinforcement, joints and inspection.

A rating belongs to a verified assembly rather than a material name. The fire situation is defined by duration, exposure curve, heated faces, continuity, restraint and load combination. Thermal response then establishes temperatures through the slab, beam, column, reinforcement and protection. Steel strength and stiffness reduce as temperature rises, while concrete experiences gradients, cracking and reduced properties.

Interface and bond mechanisms may also change. Structural adequacy compares the reduced system resistance with the fire design action, but it does not prove integrity or insulation. Joints, penetrations, edges and suspended services can interrupt compartmentation or create local thermal paths even when the main member remains adequate.

Tabulated and tested solutions are valuable because they condense evidence, yet their scope depends on geometry, material, support and detailing. A similar-looking end span cannot inherit an interior-span rating without authorised extrapolation. The chapter links specification to inspection through protection thickness, substrate preparation, reinforcement position, fire stopping and photographic records.

Later fitout changes are treated as structural fire changes when they alter that verified assembly.

Audit a fire table

Q [5 marks]. A proposed slab rating comes from an interior-span table, but the project has an end span, different depth and a large penetration. Explain the review. Its mark allocation is not an official University assessment scheme; the split is original revision support.

  • +1Compare geometry and reinforcement with the table scope.
  • +1Confirm exposure and heated-face assumptions.
  • +1Identify the changed end-span continuity.
  • +1Check adequacy, integrity and insulation separately.
  • +1Use applicable tested evidence or validated project-specific design.
The rating is not directly transferable because geometry, support continuity and compartmentation differ from the table's verified configuration.
Sia tip — Name the fire criterion that each protection measure changes; more material does not solve every criterion.
Glossary

Key terms

Fire exposure
The specified thermal action, duration and heated faces applied to an assembly.
Structural adequacy
Continued ability to carry the required fire design action.
Integrity
Ability of a separating element to prevent passage of flames and hot gases.
Insulation
Ability to limit temperature rise on the unexposed face.
Fire stopping
A tested system that preserves fire separation around joints or penetrations.
FAQ

Fire Resistance and Structural Adequacy FAQ

Why are fire criteria separated?

A member may continue carrying load while allowing excessive heat through, or it may insulate while losing structural resistance. Adequacy, integrity and insulation answer different performance questions. The project must satisfy the criteria required for the actual assembly and fire strategy.

Can a rating be transferred to a similar slab?

Only within the permitted scope of the test, table or validated model. Slab depth, deck profile, continuity, reinforcement, concrete, heated faces, openings and protection can change thermal and structural response. Similar appearance is not proof of equivalent fire performance.

Why do penetrations need special coordination?

A penetration can interrupt reinforcement, alter local heat flow and break integrity or insulation. The structural opening detail and tested fire-stop system must be coordinated before cutting, then inspected before concealment so the complete assembly matches its evidence.

Study strategy

Exam move

Write the fire chain as exposure, temperature, reduced properties, resistance and comparison with fire action. Beside it, keep separate boxes for integrity and insulation. Practise rejecting a table whose support or penetration conditions do not match, then identify the tested detail, model or inspection that would close the gap.

Draw the fire verification chain from exposure to temperatures, reduced properties, resistance and demand. Beside it, draw separate integrity and insulation boxes so one successful criterion cannot conceal another failure. Take a manufacturer table and list every assumption needed for its application, then invent one support, depth or penetration departure and state the new evidence required.

Practise matching each proposed measure to a mechanism: spray protects steel temperature, reinforcement supports structural adequacy, and a tested collar preserves a penetration seal. Build an inspection checklist for substrate, thickness, cover, bar position, joints and fire stops. Finish by tracing how a later services opening would be reviewed and recorded before the building returns to use.

Practise three short diagnoses: capacity retained but insulation failed, protection intact but a penetration seal missing, and a table applied to the wrong support condition. For each, name the failed or uncertain criterion and the evidence required next.

Avoid saying that additional cover, spray or reinforcement always improves the complete rating; each measure affects a particular thermal or structural mechanism and may introduce other detailing constraints. End with a closeout record that identifies the tested system or calculation reference, installed configuration and inspection evidence. That record is essential when future services work reopens the assembly.

Keep the fire strategy drawing beside the structural detail. It should show the compartment boundary, heated faces, protected steel, reinforcement, penetrations and support continuity so the calculation and tested systems share one assembly.
