DOM Methods for Generative SVG

The DOM connects JavaScript state to visible SVG graphics. This chapter separates selecting and mutating an existing element from creating a new namespaced node. A reliable generation pipeline selects the parent, creates the shape, computes and sets its attributes, then appends it to the document. Fixed inputs are tested before randomness is introduced.

Create one bounded rectangle

Q [5 marks]. The practice mark allocation used here is not part of the University's published assessment scheme. Create a rectangle at 60,40 with width 120, height 90 and fill rgb(48,160,210) inside a 400 by 300 SVG.

  • 1Select the SVG parent.
  • 1Create a namespaced rect node.
  • 1Set the four geometry attributes.
  • 1Set the computed fill string.
  • 1Append the node to make it visible.
The rectangle ends at x 180 and y 130, so it fits, and it appears after appendChild establishes the visible parent relationship.
Sia tip — If a configured node appears in the console but not on screen, verify its namespace and append relationship before changing values.
Glossary

Key terms

DOM method
A function exposed by document or element objects for selecting, creating or modifying nodes.
Namespace
The vocabulary identifier used when creating an SVG element through the document API.
Attribute mutation
A runtime change to an element property such as position, size or fill.
Generated node
A document element created by code rather than written directly in the original HTML.
Append operation
The action that inserts a node as the child of a chosen parent.
FAQ

DOM Methods for Generative SVG FAQ

Why does createElementNS matter for SVG?

The namespace tells the document that rect, circle or another tag belongs to the SVG vocabulary. The configured node can then behave as an SVG element when appended to the canvas.

What is the difference between setAttribute and appendChild?

SetAttribute changes a property on a node. AppendChild establishes the node's parent relationship in the document, which is necessary for a newly created shape to enter the visible SVG tree.

How should I introduce random values safely?

Prove the DOM pipeline with fixed coordinates and colours first. Then generate one value at a time, state its possible range, apply the intended rounding rule and confirm the resulting geometry stays bounded.

What order should a generated SVG node follow?

Select the SVG parent, create a namespaced element, set the attributes that define its geometry and appearance, and append it when it is ready to enter the document tree. Keeping these stages explicit makes failures local. If the node exists but is invisible, inspect its attributes and bounds. If it never appears in the tree, inspect the parent reference and append step.

The sequence turns generative drawing into a repeatable pipeline rather than a single opaque command.

How can I diagnose a shape that was appended but cannot be seen?

First confirm the appended node is under the intended SVG parent. Then inspect x, y, width and height or the corresponding attributes for its shape type. Check that dimensions are positive, coordinates place some geometry inside the viewBox and fill or stroke is visible against the background. Finally compare document order with overlapping elements, because a later opaque shape can cover an earlier one.

This checklist separates tree membership, geometry, styling and paint order as distinct causes.

Why begin a DOM test with fixed values?

Fixed values create a reproducible baseline. When the same coordinates, dimensions and colour are applied on every run, you can determine whether selection, namespace creation, attribute assignment and appending work at all. Randomness should enter only after that chain is proven. Add one generated attribute at a time and record its range.

If the output then fails, the newest boundary is the likely cause rather than any of several changing values.

How does append order affect an SVG composition?

SVG paints later siblings over earlier siblings, so append order is also visual layering. Trace the sequence in which nodes enter the parent and compare it with the intended back-to-front composition. A correctly sized rectangle can seem missing when a later opaque node covers it. If the artwork needs a different layer, change the construction or insertion order deliberately and retest.

Do not treat paint order as a styling accident because it is encoded by the document structure the script creates.

What evidence proves that a DOM drawing pipeline works?

Show that the parent selection resolves to the intended SVG, that a namespaced node is created, that its required attributes hold known values and that the appended node appears under the parent in document order. Use fixed visible geometry for this baseline and capture the final attributes rather than relying only on appearance. Then change one input and predict the corresponding attribute and visual effect.

Repeating the observation after that controlled change demonstrates a working relationship between data, DOM state and rendered output instead of a single lucky result.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Memorise the four stage pipeline as select, create, configure and append. Rebuild it with one fixed rectangle until you can explain the role of every method. Add a console check after each boundary, then remove noise. Only after the deterministic case works should you randomise channels or coordinates, and every random expression should have a written valid range.
