ICAP and Cognitive Engagement in Activity Design

Engagement is about the learner, so design the task instead

Engagement is defined in this course as a compound of how much notice, interest and curiosity a learner brings to the work and how warmly they are tied to it, in class or alone. That definition is about the learner rather than the activity, which leaves a designer with a problem, because attention cannot be installed.

What can be done is to choose a task whose structure requires a particular kind of cognitive work, and the framework in this chapter names four such structures and predicts what each one produces.

Four modes, and the line between each pair

Passive means receiving and nothing else: listening to a lecture, reading a passage, or watching a video while doing nothing else.

Active means manipulating what was presented, such as collecting observations, underlining the important sentences, completing a worksheet after reading, or answering a quiz that gives immediate feedback. Constructive means generating information beyond what the material contained, such as drawing a concept map, self-explaining a worked line, providing justifications, forming hypotheses, or comparing and contrasting.

Interactive means talking, communicating and collaborating, with a peer, a teacher or a digital resource.

Two of those definitions are tighter than they look: reading counts as passive only when nothing else is happening, and the boundary between the top two modes is not how many people are present but whether each person has to respond to what the other produced.

The mechanism, and why it is the useful column

The framework earns its keep because it names a process rather than a ranking of effort.

Passive attending stores information episodically without embedding it in a schema, which produces knowledge that cannot be recalled outside the context it arrived in. Active manipulation fills gaps, activating and strengthening prior knowledge, which produces verbatim recall and shallow understanding.

Constructive generation integrates, elaborates, connects, compares, analogises and explains why something works, which produces new inferences, repaired mental models and transfer to similar problems. Interactive dialogue is mutually generative: both partners generate, incorporate feedback, entertain new ideas and redirect the search, and something can come out of that joint building which neither of them held beforehand.

If you want the outcome, you have to cause the process, and enthusiasm does not substitute for it.

The tool does not set the mode

The course maps the same four modes onto technology for one subject. Video lectures, podcasts, digital books and slide decks sit at passive. Online quizzes, polls and flashcard tools sit at active. Writing blogs, essays or stories in shared note tools sits at constructive.

Forums, collaborative editors and discussion rooms sit at interactive. A collaborative editor used to type your own paragraph is constructive and not interactive, which is the whole lesson: the affordance is not the activity. Moving a task up one mode is therefore a task edit rather than a purchase.

Require a visible manipulation; require something the material did not contain; require a response to a specific thing another person produced. None of those three needs a new platform, and all three fit in one sentence of the task instruction.

The chapter closes by setting the framework beside the five skills the course names for the current era, and the human skills described as relying on distinctly human traits that current technologies cannot replicate well.

Diagnose a forum that everyone posts to and nobody reads

Q [8 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. Learners must post one answer to a weekly question and get a mark for posting. Nearly all post; almost nobody reads anyone else's post. The teacher wants to replace the forum with an automatically marked quiz. Place the task, evaluate the proposal and propose the cheaper repair. Writing an answer generates something beyond what was presented, so the task is constructive rather than interactive: the tool affords dialogue and the task does not require it. Swapping to a quiz would move the activity down to active, because selecting an option manipulates presented material without generating anything, and the predicted outcome drops from understanding that might transfer to shallow understanding. The repair changes the task rather than the tool. Require a second post that identifies one claim in a peer's answer and states whether it survives a named counter-case, which is mutual generation, costs nothing to configure and produces the artefact the teacher wanted.
Sia tip — Before changing a tool, ask what the learner has to produce that was not in the material, and whose output they have to respond to. Those two answers place the task.

Is interactive always better than constructive?

The framework predicts more learning higher up, but the mode has to fit the job. Fluency with vocabulary or notation is reached fastest at the active mode, and forcing dialogue onto it wastes time without changing the outcome. The framework is most useful when the objective asks for transfer or explanation, because those are precisely the outcomes the lower modes are predicted not to deliver.

Does using a collaborative platform make my activity interactive?

No. The mode is set by what the task requires, not by what the platform allows. Learners typing their own paragraphs inside a shared document are generating individually, which is the constructive mode. The activity becomes interactive only when each learner has to respond to something another learner produced, and that requirement lives in the task instruction rather than in the software.

Then pick the single activity whose objective asks for the most and write the one sentence that raises it a mode. That sentence is usually the strongest evidence you will have for the topic knowledge criterion.
