Learning Theories Behind Technology Enhanced Design

Three classrooms before three definitions

The course introduces this material by describing three classrooms and asking which one you would rather learn in. In the first, twenty vocabulary items earn points when answered correctly, repeat when answered wrongly, and unlock the next level after five correct.

In the second, the same items are organised into categories, connected to words the learner already knows, mapped, then recalled from memory. In the third, a group receives an authentic problem, each member researches part of it, and the group discusses competing explanations and builds one answer. Same content, three theories.

The point of the question is not that one answer is correct, but that a design carries a theory whether or not its designer has named one.

Behaviourism: consequences shape behaviour

Every behaviour is picked up through conditioning, conditioning happens as a creature deals with its surroundings, and what we do is therefore shaped by what is around us.

Association comes first: a stimulus that produced nothing comes, through repeated pairing, to produce a response on its own, with no conscious reasoning required. Then consequences. Reinforcers, positive or negative, increase the likelihood that a behaviour is repeated; punishers, positive or negative, decrease it; neutral operants have no effect. Positive and negative say only whether something was added or taken away.

Removing a disliked task once homework is finished is negative reinforcement and makes the behaviour more likely; taking away a privilege is negative punishment and makes it less likely. Getting that pair backwards is the commonest error in this material.

The course also points out that several familiar digital products are this theory in software: an automated feedback provider, an adaptive drill engine, and a mastery controller that holds a learner at a level until a threshold is reached.

Cognitivism: what is happening inside the learner

The shift is a change of question, from how behaviour can be reinforced to how learners attend, process, remember and apply.

Information arrives, attention picks out what counts, working memory does the active work and runs out fast, long-term memory stores schemas, and retrieval puts the knowledge to use. Each stage yields a design rule. Working memory is limited, so break complex content into meaningful chunks with headings and numbered stages. Attention is selective, so guide it with signalling and remove irrelevant detail.

Automatic processing can interfere with controlled thinking, so avoid conflicting cues and keep instructions simple and consistent. New learning becomes meaningful when it connects to an existing schema, so activating prior knowledge is a design step rather than a warm-up.

The course applies the same reading to tool design, contrasting a system that supplies the full answer with one that asks what the learner already knows, which part is confusing, offers a hint, asks for reasoning and only then compares with feedback.

Social constructivism, and reading all three side by side

Here learning is something done together, and what a person knows grows out of dealings with the culture and the society around them, with the teacher standing by as a facilitator who keeps exploration inside a given frame.

The central construct is the zone of proximal development, the distance between what a learner can do alone and what they can do under guidance, or alongside peers who are further ahead. The jigsaw is the worked strategy: learners take different sections in a home group, meet the others who took the same section, and return so that no member can answer without the rest.

Set against each other, the three differ in who drives learning, what the teacher is for, and which technologies fit, and most real designs carry two of them for two different jobs.

The first half is behaviourist: access to the next chapter is a consequence that follows the behaviour and raises its frequency, and repeating the missed item is a mastery condition. The second half is social constructivist, because two learners generate explanations, negotiate and co-construct a shared answer. Removing the first half costs the fluency that makes the second possible, since a learner who cannot recall what happened has nothing to explain. Removing the second costs the only part of the design where meaning is built rather than checked. The application is not confused; it is using two theories for two jobs, and saying so is stronger than picking one label.

Key terms

Operant Conditioning
Learning in which the consequence that follows a behaviour changes how likely that behaviour is to be repeated, through reinforcement or punishment.
Negative Reinforcement
The removal of something unpleasant after a behaviour, which makes the behaviour more likely rather than less.
Working Memory
The limited store in which information is actively processed, which is why complex content has to be chunked into meaningful steps.
Schema
An organised knowledge structure that lets a learner interpret new information, and the thing new learning has to connect to in order to become meaningful.
Zone Of Proximal Development
The gap between what a learner reaches solving a problem alone and what the same learner reaches with an adult guiding them or alongside peers further ahead.
Scaffolding
Temporary support that makes a task reachable without performing the thinking for the learner, and which is removed as competence grows.

Can one lesson use more than one learning theory?

Yes, and most good ones do. The course's own attribution exercises carry a primary theory and a possible secondary theory on most rows, because a design typically uses conditioning for fluency and one of the other two for meaning. The stronger answer names both and says which feature of the activity separates them, rather than forcing a single label.

How do I stop confusing negative reinforcement with punishment?

Answer two questions in a fixed order. Did something get added or taken away, and did the behaviour become more or less likely? The first answer gives you positive or negative and the second gives you reinforcement or punishment. Negative reinforcement takes something away and still raises the behaviour, which is exactly the combination people mislabel.

Is behaviourism outdated for designing with technology?

Not for the jobs it is good at. The course points out that automated feedback, adaptive drill and mastery gating are conditioning implemented in software, and they build fluency efficiently. What they cannot do is produce the understanding that transfers, which is why the other two theories carry the parts of a design where meaning is constructed.
