Assessment

How PES6252 is assessed

ComponentWeightFormat
Group Presentation50%A group of four to five critically analyses and compares the coaching performance of three coaches; fifteen to thirty minutes with questions from the floor, and an individual three hundred word written reflection inside the same fifty
Writing Assignment50%A literature review on a topic or question in the theory or the practice of coaching, with what the review changes in your own future coaching practice

The course outline lists these two tasks and gives each fifty per cent, so the table totals one hundred. A separate assessment sheet opens both of them up into criteria: inside the presentation half, forty is the presentation and ten an individual three hundred word reflection; inside the writing half the split is twenty for content, twenty for discussion and creativity and ten for format. A blended learning and participation bonus of ten per cent carries the qualifier if any and sits outside the hundred. Both briefs state that marks will be deducted if the work is not submitted to Turnitin in Moodle. The two documents also disagree on three details, covered below. Nothing in the course materials states a hurdle, a minimum component mark, an attendance threshold or a late penalty, so confirm the current weights, deadlines and any pass conditions on the course Moodle page.

Its published synopsis describes a course about coaching in both theory and practice, working through the ideas and techniques that sit under coaching done well and putting them to work with individual athletes and with squads, across the principles of coaching, training and management, the pedagogy, the planning, how skill is learned, and the psychology.

Teaching runs as lectures for theory and applied practical workshops for technique. Both assessment tasks reward one underlying skill: turning an impression about a coach into a record a second person could reproduce and argue with.

The theory the course opens with

Chapters one to four fix the vocabulary everything later stands on.

Effectiveness is defined as a relation rather than a property of the coach, linking three forms of coaching knowledge to athlete outcomes inside a named coaching context, with consistency across seasons separating expertise from a good year. Positive sport experience for young athletes turns that definition on children, where the context is chosen by adults rather than given by the sport.

Four families of learning theory then supply four incompatible accounts of what learning is, which work together as a differential diagnosis, and eight instructional models package those commitments into plans a coach can actually run.

The observation block, which both assessment tasks rest on

Chapters five to ten are the method, and they carry the largest single criterion in the group presentation.

Systematic observation is defined by four requirements, not described: a trained observer, written categories, three distinct acts of observing, recording and analysing, and agreement between independent coders. Four published instruments then differ in what they take the unit of coaching to be, the utterance, the phase of practice, the athlete attempt or the mistake, and each buys precision by discarding something.

The published evidence is read twice throughout, once for what it measured and once for what a careless citation would add, and the chapter on observer error names the five ways a record goes wrong while still looking sound.

Turn a coaching impression into a claim an instrument can test

Q [9 marks]. AskSia authored practice. A club committee says its new head coach is more positive than the previous one, and asks you to confirm it before extending the contract. You have video of two sessions from each coach, of forty five and seventy minutes for the new coach and sixty and sixty five for the old one. Design the check and state the claim you will be able to make. The marks shown are an AskSia study allocation and are not the University marking scheme.
  • 3Replace the word positive with categories a second coder could apply.
  • 3Choose recording methods and say why raw counts will not do here.
  • 3State the claim the design supports, and the one it cannot.
Positive is not codable, so it is replaced by categories from a published instrument: praise, encouragement or hustle, scold, and the two modelling categories, with silence and uncodable added so that the set is exhaustive and mutually exclusive. Praise, scold and modelling are discrete acts and are event recorded; silence is a state with a length and is duration recorded. Because the four sessions run from forty five to seventy minutes, everything is reported as rate per minute or as a share of session time, since a raw comparison would report the length of the recordings as though it were the coaches behaviour. Two coders train against a criterion coding and agreement is measured twice. The claim the design supports is that across these four sessions the two coaches differed in the rate of praise and scold by a stated amount. The claim it cannot support is that the new coach is better, since the instrument counts occurrences and is silent on their content and quality.
Sia tip — Before coding anything, write the sentence you hope to end up with. If the instrument you chose does not store one of its nouns, change the instrument now rather than after forty minutes of coding.
Glossary

Key terms

Systematic Observation
A method in which a trained person follows written guidelines to observe, record and analyse interactions, such that another person viewing the same events would agree with the recorded data. Agreement between observers is the condition that makes the data mean anything.
Instruction Triad
The division of coaching instruction into pre, concurrent and post instruction according to its timing relative to the athlete attempt. The distinction matters because timing changes how the information can be used.
Duration Recording
A recording method that times how long a behaviour lasts rather than how often it happens. It suits states with a length, such as silence, monitoring or athlete activity time.
Observer Drift
The gradual change in how an observer applies the coding rules across a long collection period. It is invisible to the person drifting, which is why agreement has to be re measured partway through rather than only at the start.
Observer Reactivity
The change in a coach or athlete behaviour caused by knowing that a camera or an observer is present. It typically fades with habituation, so sessions recorded before data collection begins are usually discarded.
FAQ

PES6252 FAQ

How is this course assessed?

The published outline lists two tasks and gives each of them fifty per cent. One is a group presentation in which a group of four to five critically analyses and compares the coaching performance of three coaches, and it contains an individual three hundred word written reflection worth ten of that fifty.

The other is a written literature review on a question drawn from the theory or the practice of coaching, together with what the review changes in your own coaching. A separate assessment sheet adds a blended learning and participation bonus of ten per cent, qualified with the words if any, which sits outside the two tasks.

What makes a literature review topic too broad for this assignment?

A topic is too broad when you cannot name the kind of study that would settle it. The published guidance gives roughly seven hundred and fifty words to introduction and elaboration and roughly eight hundred to discussion and critique, so more than half the space is reserved for arguing with the papers rather than reporting them.

Narrow by naming the contested claim rather than the field, then naming the evidence type that could decide it, then setting a population boundary. A question that survives those three cuts leaves room for the critique the criteria actually reward.

What is the group presentation really marked on?

The criteria published for the presentation give ten per cent to content, fifteen to use of instruments, five to presentation quality, five to English and referencing style, and five to peer assessment, with the individual reflection carrying the remaining ten. Use of instruments is therefore the single largest criterion, worth more than delivery and referencing combined.

A group that films three coaches and describes what it saw is answering the smallest parts of the rubric; a group that codes the footage with a named instrument, reports rates and states what the instrument cannot see is answering the largest.

Which observation instrument should my group choose?

Choose by the question, because each instrument records something the others discard. If you want to know who was talking and whether athletes ever started the exchange, only an interaction analysis instrument separates athlete response from athlete initiation. If you want to know whether a coach behaves differently in the warm up than in team work, you need an instrument whose unit is the phase of practice.

If you want the timing of instruction relative to the attempt, you need the fourteen category practice instrument. If you want to know who the coaching was aimed at, only the multidimensional system stores a recipient.

Why does observer reliability matter so much in this course?

Because a corrupted record looks exactly like a sound one. A drifting coder produces a complete sheet, a biased coder produces plausible totals, and a coach who knows he is being filmed produces a session. Five classic threats are named, drift, bias, cheating, system complexity and reactivity, and every guard against them is applied before or during data collection rather than afterwards.

Practically, this means habituating the coach to the camera, training coders against a criterion coding, and measuring agreement at least twice rather than once at the start.

Study strategy

How to prepare for the assessments

Pick one coach in one sport whose sessions you can actually watch, and carry them through every chapter rather than reading the chapters and then looking for coaches.

Code twenty minutes of one session with a named instrument in week three, before anything is due, because the first attempt always exposes a category set that is neither exhaustive nor mutually exclusive, and finding that out early costs an evening instead of a grade. Then write the sentence you want your presentation to end with, and check that the instrument you chose actually stores every noun in it.
