Xunzi on Human Nature and the Best Explanation

Three kinds of inference, and the one that gets misused

A Meeting 5 outcome asks you to identify deductive, inductive and abductive arguments in the wild. Deduction contains its conclusion in its premises, so if they hold it cannot fail. Induction moves from observed cases to unobserved ones and promises likelihood, never certainty.

Abduction moves from an observation to what would explain it, and promises only the best available account, held tentatively.

The third is the one that gets faked, in two ways. An inference to the best explanation with a field of one is not an inference; it is a hypothesis being announced, because best is comparative and needs something to compare against.

And if the criteria arrive after the winner, you have produced a justification rather than a comparison.

State the grounds in order first: scope, economy, and testability, which is the most useful of the three because an account that predicts something the others do not gives you a way to distinguish them.

The disagreement with Mengzi

The e-lectures take up an essential definition of human nature, the contrast with animals, and Xunzi's use of inference to the best explanation against Mengzi.

It is a clean example because both sides see the same facts: people are capable of goodness, and goodness takes work. Mengzi holds that the capacity is present from the start, so development cultivates something already there.

Xunzi holds that we begin with appetites which, unshaped, produce conflict, and that goodness is an achievement produced by deliberate effort, learning and inherited forms.

Why the argument is abductive

The claim is not that Mengzi contradicts himself but that his account fits the evidence less well.

If goodness were already present and needed only releasing, the enormous apparatus of teachers, forms, correction and practice would be doing very little and its absence would not matter much. Removing it reliably produces the conflict the theory of appetites predicts. The account that explains why so much effort is required, and why it works, is the one that treats goodness as produced.

That is held tentatively: an opponent who explained the necessity of the effort another way would be back in contention.

An inference to the best explanation, built step by step

Q [4 marks]. In a group of five students, the two who attended every meeting wrote the weakest individual reflections. Build an inference to the best explanation, including the check that would change your ranking. The marks beside the steps are our own study weighting, not a University scheme.
  • 1State the observation without any explanation in it.
  • 1List at least two rivals, including the boring one.
  • 1Score them on scope, economy and testability.
  • 1Name the winner and the check that would overturn it.
Observation: the two students with full attendance produced the weakest reflections. Rivals: first, attendance substituted for private thinking; second, those two were weaker writers and attendance is unrelated; third, the reflections were graded on a quality the meetings do not develop. Scoring: the first explains the correlation but assumes a substitution nobody observed. The second is the most economical, needing no extra machinery, though it leaves the attendance pattern unexplained. The third explains both and predicts something the others do not, namely that the same students should do well on tasks the meetings do develop. The third wins because it is the only one that makes a check possible, and the check is specified: look at those students on a discussion based task. If they are weak there too, the second recovers.
Sia tip — Write the observation as a sentence containing no explanation at all. If your statement of the observation already names a cause, you have skipped the comparison the method exists for.
Glossary

Key terms

Deductive Argument
One whose conclusion is contained in its premises, so that granted the premises the conclusion cannot fail.
Inductive Argument
One that moves from observed cases to unobserved ones, offering likelihood rather than certainty and vulnerable to an unrepresentative sample.
Abductive Argument
One that moves from an observation to the account that would best explain it, after rivals have been named and compared on stated grounds.
Explanatory Scope
How much of what we observe an account covers without special pleading.
Nature
In this dispute, what a person begins with: the appetites and preferences that precede any cultivation.
Deliberate Effort
The cultivated activity that reshapes what we begin with, working through learning and inherited forms rather than releasing something already present.
FAQ

Xunzi on Human Nature and the Best Explanation FAQ

How do I tell an abductive argument from an inductive one?

Ask what the conclusion is about. An inductive conclusion extends a pattern to further cases of the same kind. An abductive conclusion posits something that would account for the pattern, which means it introduces a cause or mechanism the observation does not itself contain.

Is Xunzi saying people are evil?

The position is about what we begin with, not about a verdict on persons. What we start with is a set of appetites that, left unshaped, set people in competition for the same things. Goodness is not denied; it is relocated to what deliberate effort produces, which is why the account of forms follows immediately.

Why is a field of one such a serious flaw?

Because best is comparative. Naming a single explanation and calling it best asserts a ranking over a set with one member, which tells a reader nothing about whether anything else fits the same evidence. Adding even one boring rival changes the answer more often than students expect.

What makes testability more useful than the other grounds?

It converts a comparison into something you can act on. Scope and economy are judged by inspection and invite disagreement; a prediction one account makes and the others do not tells you what to go and look at. An account that fits everything equally well after the fact is the weakest kind.

How would Mengzi reply to the argument from effort?

By explaining the necessity of the apparatus another way, for example as protection against obstruction rather than as production of something absent. That reply is available, which is exactly why the conclusion is held tentatively rather than as a refutation.

Study strategy

Exam move

Practise this on ordinary life rather than on the texts, because the method is easiest to learn where you have no stake. Take something you noticed today, write the observation without a cause in it, list two rivals and name the check. Do that four or five times and the structure becomes automatic.

Then apply it to the dispute in the text, and make sure you can state Mengzi's position in a form he would accept before you explain why the rival wins.
