Spacing, Interleaving and Desirable Difficulties

The design session

The fifth session turns mechanism into a schedule. Its stated content is spacing, interleaving, gear-shifting and spiralling, and it ends in a workshop that redesigns a blocked curriculum into an interleaved one. Everything in it follows from one sentence: spacing makes retrieval effortful again.

Spacing is not a device for covering material more often; it is a device for arranging that each return happens while recall is hard.

The sequence has three moves. The first encounter builds an organised, meaningful representation, and it is not optional, because spacing cannot rescue material that was never coherently encoded.

The return after a delay allows some forgetting so that retrieval requires effort, and this is the step that feels wrong to schedule and is the one doing the work. The revisit at a longer interval follows as retrieval becomes reliable, because a recall that is already fluent adds very little.

Spiralling and gear-shifting express the same idea at curriculum level.

A spiral returns to a topic at intervals with increasing demand instead of covering it once; gear-shifting changes the kind of processing demanded between encounters, so the second pass is not a repetition of the first.

Both avoid the failure in which a topic is revisited so soon and so identically that the revisit is recognition.

Interleaving and the trade it asks you to accept

Interleaving means switching between topics while studying rather than finishing one before starting the next.

Its benefit is specific: when problem types are mixed, the learner must first decide which approach applies, and that decision is the skill a blocked schedule never exercises because the block has already announced the answer. The cost is equally specific.

Performance during the blocks falls, and performance on anything mixed rises, so the ranking of the two schedules depends entirely on which assessment is used.

Six strategies sit around these two. Spaced practice and interleaving arrange the encounters. Retrieval practice, elaboration and concrete examples determine what happens inside one. Dual coding changes how the material is represented.

A module can score well on the last four and still fail, because the first two decide whether any of it remains in a month.

When a difficulty is not desirable

A demand earns its place only when it works toward what is being learned, and three conditions have to hold. The retrieval has to succeed at least some of the time, because a failed attempt that is never corrected builds nothing.

Feedback has to follow the effort and correct misconceptions before they stabilise. And the difficulty has to come from the task rather than from the presentation, which is the direct link back to cognitive load: a confusing display is a difficulty and it is not a desirable one, because the effort it imposes is spent reconciling the display rather than on the content.

A fourth condition is social rather than cognitive.

Announcing the trade in advance is part of the design. Learners told that weekly scores will dip, that the dip is expected, and that the mixed assessment is the measure that matters, experience the difficulty as a plan. Learners not told experience the same schedule as a course that has become confusing, and reorganise their own study back into blocks.

Each block test is taken immediately after its own block and announces its own topic, so the learner never has to decide which knowledge applies and the score records retrieval strength rather than durability. The mixed assessment removes both supports at once, which is why performance falls only there. The rebuild holds the total time on each strand unchanged and changes the order: every week carries a short element of all three, with anatomy leading in week one, technique in week two and troubleshooting in week three, and earlier strands returning as recall openers rather than as re-teaching. Practice sets mix the three strands so the approach must be chosen before it is applied. The predictable cost is lower weekly scores, and learners have to be told that in advance or they will read it as the course getting worse.

Why do weekly block tests look so good and predict so little?

Each test follows its own block immediately and announces its own topic, so the material is still fluently available and the learner never has to decide which approach applies. Both supports vanish in a mixed assessment, which is why scores that looked stable all term fall at the only point where the knowledge has to be selected as well as recalled.

Does interleaving mean covering less of each topic?

No. The redesign holds the total time on each strand constant and changes only the order in which the strands appear. If a schedule needs extra hours after being rebuilt, something other than the sequence has been altered, and the comparison with the blocked version no longer holds.

Learners perform worse on everything after topics were mixed. What went wrong?

Mixing arranges encounters; it does not create the first coherent representation. If the strands were never separately encoded well enough to be told apart, mixing removes the support that was holding performance up and adds a discrimination demand the learner cannot meet. Establish each strand to a usable standard first, then interleave.

How do you tell a desirable difficulty from an obstacle?

Ask where the effort is going. Effort spent generating an answer or choosing between approaches builds the memory. Effort spent reconciling a crowded slide or an unclear instruction is consumed before it reaches the content. The first is worth keeping and the second is always worth removing.

Why tell learners in advance that their scores will fall?

Because an unexplained dip is read as evidence that the teaching has got worse, and learners respond by reorganising their own study back into blocks. Naming the trade turns the same experience into a plan they are participating in, which is why the announcement counts as part of the design.
