Worked solution

Read the two diagnostic features in the description. 'Single layer' fixes it as simple rather than stratified; 'flattened' fixes the cell shape as squamous. Together those give simple squamous epithelium.

Confirm with location. Lining a vessel lumen, this is endothelium — the simple squamous epithelium of the cardiovascular system, which is exactly the pairing of structure and site the course asks you to make.
State the functional logic. A single flattened layer gives the shortest possible diffusion distance, which is what exchange surfaces require, and presents a smooth low-resistance surface to flowing blood.
Eliminate on structure, not on plausibility. Stratified squamous has many layers and lines abrasion-prone surfaces; simple cuboidal has cube-shaped cells; dense connective tissue is not an epithelium at all and would show fibres with scattered nuclei rather than a continuous cell layer.

The trap: Reading the shape and skipping the layer count, or the reverse. Epithelial identification is always two independent decisions — number of layers, then cell shape — and answering on one alone is how students confuse simple with stratified squamous. The second trap is naming the tissue and stopping: this course consistently asks why that structure suits that location. classic slip!

What LSM2212 is, and where it sits

LSM2212 is the NUS Department of Anatomy's introduction to human structure and function, and the official description sets out an approach that distinguishes it from a pure gross anatomy course: gross anatomy is integrated with microscopic anatomy throughout, and the histological organisation of the four primary tissues is covered alongside it.

The syllabus works through eleven areas: cells and tissues of the body first, then the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, reproductive, immune, endocrine and nervous systems, with blood treated in its own right. The official learning outcomes name three goals — the basic structures and functions of the human organ systems, the histological features of epithelial, connective, nervous and muscular tissue, and the clinical relevance of anatomical structures in exemplary diseases.

That clinical framing matters for how the course is examined. Structures are not asked about in isolation; they are asked about in the context of what goes wrong. With 70% of the grade in the final examination, the course rewards students who have built an integrated picture rather than eleven separate lists.

The mistakes that cost marks

Identifying epithelium on one feature. Layer count and cell shape are two independent decisions. Answering on shape alone is how simple squamous and stratified squamous get confused.

Names without relationships. Anatomy questions ask what is adjacent, what passes through, what is supplied by what. A list of names cannot answer those.

Separating histology from gross anatomy. The course integrates them by design and examines them together. Studying them in separate blocks doubles the work.

Underweighting the final. At 70%, the final is the course. Preparation that begins in the revision period is preparation that began too late.

Prerequisites, related courses & why it matters

Entry requirement published by NUS: GCE A-Level or H2 Biology or equivalent, or LSM1301 General Biology. The course is worth 4 units and is offered in Semester 1 by the Department of Anatomy.

Why it matters beyond the grade. Human anatomy is the structural foundation for medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, biomedical science and health research. The integrated gross-and-microscopic approach in this course is the same one clinical training assumes.

Is LSM2212 hard?

It rates moderately hard. There is no mathematics, but the retention load is heavy — eleven organ systems in gross and microscopic view — and 70% of the grade sits in the final examination.

What is the assessment breakdown?

What do I need before taking it?

GCE A-Level or H2 Biology or an equivalent, or LSM1301 General Biology. If you did not take biology at A-Level, LSM1301 is the route in.
