Worked example
Unemployment falls from 5.2% to 4.8% while the labour force participation rate also falls. What should you conclude?
Start from the definition, which is exactly what CLO2 asks for: the unemployment rate is unemployed people divided by the labour force, and the labour force counts only those working or actively seeking work.
State the conclusion carefully. The fall is consistent with genuine hiring, with discouraged workers withdrawing, or with both. The headline rate cannot distinguish them, so a professional judgement needs employment levels or the employment-to-population ratio alongside it.
Note why this is the course's central lesson about aggregates. CLO2 asks you to evaluate the major economic aggregates and determine how they are measured, precisely because the measurement convention determines what movements in the number can support.
The trap: Option B reads the headline number without its definition, which is the error the aggregates topic exists to prevent. Option C overcorrects into the opposite conclusion on equally thin evidence. Option D abandons analysis — the two indicators moving together is informative, and saying what the data can and cannot support is the answer, not a refusal to answer. classic slip!

What ECON1607 is, and where it sits
ECON1607 is unusual in doing two jobs at once, and the description says so directly: it provides insight into the structure of an economy, how it operates and why policy makers decide as they do, and it introduces various quantitative methods and techniques to facilitate decision-making practices.
The framing is explicitly applied. RMIT states the course is designed to give you the economic knowledge and skills necessary to make well-informed business and accounting decisions — not to train economists, but to make business and accounting graduates economically literate and numerically capable.
The six published learning outcomes split cleanly between those two strands. Four concern economics: applying microeconomic theory to practical problems, evaluating major economic aggregates and how they are measured, analysing business cycles to justify professional decisions, and identifying economic problems and the tools to analyse them. Two concern quantitative work: applying quantitative skills to real-life problems, and undertaking basic estimation and hypothesis tests using probability theory.

Difficulty & time commitment
Is ECON1607 hard, and how much time does it take?
ECON1607 is manageable if you keep a weekly rhythm and treat the back half as the main event. The pattern is consistent: it starts gently and steepens, and the heaviest assessment is the part that separates grades.
The difficulty curve and the assessment weighting point the same way: the back half is harder and worth more. Front-loading effort there is the highest-return decision in the unit.

- Practise stating conclusions as what the data support rather than as a verdict — the business-cycle outcome asks you to justify decisions, not to declare them.
- Do the estimation and hypothesis testing problems by hand at least once before relying on software output.
- Connect the two strands deliberately: use a quantitative method on an economic question, which is what the final task asks for.

This is a coursework unit. Coursework carries 100% of the grade and the assessment task 2 is the single heaviest piece at 40%, so steady work across the semester decides your result more than any one sitting. Continual assessment.

The mistakes that cost marks
Headline indicators read without definitions. An unemployment rate can fall because people stopped looking. CLO2 exists because measurement conventions determine what a movement means.
The quantitative strand deferred. CLO6 appears only in the final 40% task. Leaving it until then means meeting the hardest material at the highest stakes.
Correlation between economic variables read as causation. Determining interrelationships is not the same as establishing direction, and the course asks for the former stated honestly.
Software output reported without interpretation. CLO6 explicitly requires interpreting numerical and graphical outputs, not producing them.
