Firm-Specific Advantages

Firm-Specific Advantages frames a decision through resources and capabilities, VRIO logic and transferability.

The objective is to test whether an apparent strength remains valuable and deployable abroad, so the chapter should be read as a chain from problem definition to evidence, option comparison and accountable action.

Start with resources and capabilities and name the decision owner, affected stakeholders and time horizon.

The same fact can matter differently across those positions, so the opening frame determines which evidence is relevant.

Use VRIO logic to explain how the present condition produces an opportunity, cost or risk. A strong mechanism states what changes, for whom and through which organisational, market or institutional process.

Apply transferability when comparing options.

Keep criteria distinct, test trade-offs and ask which assumption drives the recommendation. A score or matrix only helps when its criteria are justified by the case.

For the application — test whether an apparent strength remains valuable and deployable abroad — finish with an actor, action, rationale and review trigger.

This turns analysis into a recommendation while keeping the decision open to new evidence.

Build a decision ledger for Firm-Specific Advantages. Separate the current condition, the stakeholder affected, the evidence supporting resources and capabilities, the mechanism represented by VRIO logic and the criterion supplied by transferability.

If a recommendation cannot point back to one of those entries, it is probably preference dressed as analysis rather than a consequence of the case.

Compare at least two feasible options against the same criteria. State who benefits, who bears cost or risk, what capability implementation requires and what evidence would reveal failure.

This comparison is essential when students need to test whether an apparent strength remains valuable and deployable abroad, because an attractive option is not yet a defensible choice until its trade-offs are made visible.

Rehearse the 7008IBA response as a short briefing: one sentence for the decision, two for the evidence and mechanism, one for the alternative and one for the qualified recommendation.

Then expand only the move that needs more support. This protects the argument structure when a report, presentation or timed case imposes a strict word or time limit.

A complete Firm-Specific Advantages response should make the task visible before the detail: identify what must be decided, define the relevant terms, connect the evidence to VRIO logic, and use transferability to test the result.

The final sentence should answer the question actually asked rather than merely repeat the topic.

The controlling limit is specific: Domestic success does not prove international transfer.

Keep that limit beside the worked example, because it separates a careful 7008IBA answer from one that sounds confident but claims more than the task or evidence supports.

For revision, retrieve resources and capabilities, VRIO logic and transferability without notes, explain their relationship aloud, then complete a changed version of the application: test whether an apparent strength remains valuable and deployable abroad.

Record the first point at which your reasoning fails and repair that move before attempting another case.

Worked example: Firm-Specific Advantages

Q [4 marks]. A draft reaches a conclusion about how to test whether an apparent strength remains valuable and deployable abroad after naming resources and capabilities, but it never tests the claim through VRIO logic or transferability. Audit and repair the reasoning. This is AskSia-authored practice, not a University question or marking scheme.
  • 1Write the narrow claim that resources and capabilities is being used to support.
  • 1Attach the specific observation, source or condition required by VRIO logic.
  • 1Use transferability to state a counter-case, failed assumption or observation that would change the claim.
  • 1Revise the conclusion so the evidence and this boundary are both visible: Domestic success does not prove international transfer.
The audit turns resources and capabilities into a narrow claim, connects it to the evidence required by VRIO logic, and lets transferability expose a counter-case or failed assumption. The repaired conclusion says what the evidence establishes while retaining this limit: Domestic success does not prove international transfer.
Sia tip — Passing VRIO at home is not the transferability test. Identify what must travel, what depends on the domestic setting, and which host-country evidence shows the advantage can still be deployed abroad.
Glossary

Key terms

Firm-specific advantages (FSAs)
Firm-specific advantages are transferable or location-bound resources, capabilities and knowledge that allow a firm to create value or overcome the costs of operating abroad. In this chapter, use the concept when you test whether an apparent strength remains valuable and deployable abroad.
Value creation through recombination / resource recombination
Resource recombination creates value by combining a multinational's existing firm-specific advantages with new knowledge, capabilities or location assets rather than merely replicating the home operation. In this chapter, use the concept when you test whether an apparent strength remains valuable and deployable abroad.
Location advantages
Location advantages are country- or region-specific conditions, such as resources, institutions, demand, clusters or costs, that make particular activities more valuable in that place. In this chapter, use the concept when you test whether an apparent strength remains valuable and deployable abroad.
FAQ

Firm-Specific Advantages FAQ

What is the main task in Firm-Specific Advantages?

Test whether an apparent strength remains valuable and deployable abroad.

How do resources and capabilities and VRIO logic work together?

Use resources and capabilities to establish the object or condition, then use VRIO logic to explain how it changes the outcome being analysed.

What must a 7008IBA answer qualify here?

Domestic success does not prove international transfer.

How should I revise Firm-Specific Advantages?

Retrieve resources and capabilities, VRIO logic and transferability, apply them to a changed case, and correct the first point where the evidence no longer supports the conclusion.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Reconstruct the relationship among resources and capabilities, VRIO logic and transferability; complete the chapter application without notes; then test the result against this limit: Domestic success does not prove international transfer.
