Creative Collaboration and Empathy

Define divergent thinking

The course material gives this chapter a concrete anchor: The learning journey links creative option generation with collaboration, feedback and stakeholder understanding.

That divergent thinking anchor controls how empathy is explained and how constructive feedback is tested in changed practice.

Creative Collaboration and Empathy frames a decision through divergent thinking, empathy and constructive feedback.

The objective is to generate and compare options with stakeholders whose experience and constraints differ, so the chapter should be read as a chain from problem definition to evidence, option comparison and accountable action.

Start with divergent thinking and name the decision owner, affected stakeholders and time horizon.

The same divergent thinking fact can matter differently across those positions, so the opening frame determines which evidence is relevant.

Use empathy to explain how the present condition produces an opportunity, cost or risk.

A strong empathy mechanism states what changes, for whom and through which organisational, market or institutional process.

Trace empathy

Apply constructive feedback when comparing options. Keep the constructive feedback criteria distinct, test trade-offs and ask which assumption drives the recommendation.

A score or matrix helps only when its criteria are justified by the case.

For the application — generate and compare options with stakeholders whose experience and constraints differ — finish with an actor, action, rationale and review trigger. This turns the constructive feedback analysis into a recommendation while keeping the decision open to new evidence.

Build a decision ledger.

Separate the current condition, the stakeholder affected, the evidence supporting divergent thinking, the mechanism represented by empathy and the criterion supplied by constructive feedback.

If a constructive feedback recommendation cannot point back to one of those entries, it is probably preference dressed as analysis rather than a consequence of the case.

Compare at least two feasible options against the same criteria. State who benefits under constructive feedback, who bears cost or risk, what capability implementation requires and what evidence would reveal failure.

This comparison is essential when students need to generate and compare options with stakeholders whose experience and constraints differ, because an attractive option is not defensible until its trade-offs are visible.

Test with constructive feedback

Rehearse the 7106IBA divergent thinking response as a short briefing: one sentence for the decision, two for the evidence and mechanism, one for the alternative and one for the qualified recommendation.

Then expand only the empathy move that needs more support. This protects the argument structure under a strict word or time limit.

A complete response should make the task visible before the detail: identify what must be decided, define the relevant terms, connect the evidence to empathy, and use constructive feedback to test the result.

The final sentence about constructive feedback should answer the question actually asked rather than merely repeat the topic.

The controlling limit is specific: Empathy supports inquiry and design but does not authorise speaking for people or treating preference as evidence of effectiveness.

Keep that constructive feedback limit beside the worked example, because it separates a careful 7106IBA answer from one that sounds confident but claims more than the task or evidence supports.

For revision, retrieve divergent thinking, empathy and constructive feedback without notes, explain their relationship aloud, then complete a changed version of the application: generate and compare options with stakeholders whose experience and constraints differ.

Record the first failed empathy reasoning move and repair it before attempting another case.

Convert interview tension into design criteria

Q [3 marks]. Remote employees say an attendance dashboard feels punitive, while managers say they need visibility. How can the team create an empathetic design brief?
  • 1Translate employee accounts into needs for context, autonomy and protection from misleading inference.
  • 1Translate the management request into specific decisions the dashboard must support.
  • 1Co-create criteria that show workload coordination without ranking individuals by presence alone.
The brief should require decision-relevant team patterns, explanatory context and safeguards against individual surveillance, with prototypes tested by both groups.
Sia tip — Empathy work is strongest when a participant's words change a design criterion, not when they merely decorate a persona.
Glossary

Key terms

divergent thinking
Generation of multiple substantially different possibilities before evaluation narrows the field. Use this definition when the task is to generate and compare options with stakeholders whose experience and constraints differ.
empathy
Disciplined effort to understand another person's context and perspective without replacing their account with assumption. Use this definition when the task is to generate and compare options with stakeholders whose experience and constraints differ.
constructive feedback
Specific, evidence-oriented response designed to improve reasoning or action while keeping the recipient able to respond. Use this definition when the task is to generate and compare options with stakeholders whose experience and constraints differ.
FAQ

Creative Collaboration and Empathy FAQ

What is the main task in Creative Collaboration and Empathy?

Generate and compare options with stakeholders whose experience and constraints differ.

How do divergent thinking and empathy work together?

Use divergent thinking to establish the object or condition, then use empathy to explain how it changes the outcome being analysed.

What must a 7106IBA answer qualify here?

Empathy supports inquiry and design but does not authorise speaking for people or treating preference as evidence of effectiveness.

How should I revise Creative Collaboration and Empathy?

Retrieve divergent thinking, empathy and constructive feedback, apply them to a changed case, and correct the first point where the evidence no longer supports the conclusion.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Reconstruct the relationship among divergent thinking, empathy and constructive feedback; complete the chapter application without notes; then test the result against this limit: Empathy supports inquiry and design but does not authorise speaking for people or treating preference as evidence of effectiveness.
