Design Thinking and Inclusive Discovery

Define problem framing

The course material gives this chapter a concrete anchor: Week 1 combines design thinking with explicit inclusive-design material. That problem framing anchor controls how stakeholder interview is explained and how inclusive design is tested in changed practice.

Design Thinking and Inclusive Discovery frames a decision through problem framing, stakeholder interview and inclusive design.

The objective is to turn stakeholder and user evidence into a testable studio problem, so the chapter should be read as a chain from problem definition to evidence, option comparison and accountable action.

Start with problem framing and name the decision owner, affected stakeholders and time horizon.

The same problem framing fact can matter differently across those positions, so the opening frame determines which evidence is relevant.

Use stakeholder interview to explain how the present condition produces an opportunity, cost or risk.

A strong stakeholder interview mechanism states what changes, for whom and through which organisational, market or institutional process.

Apply inclusive design when comparing options. Keep the inclusive design criteria distinct, test trade-offs and ask which assumption drives the recommendation.

A score or matrix helps only when its criteria are justified by the case.

For the application — turn stakeholder and user evidence into a testable studio problem — finish with an actor, action, rationale and review trigger. This turns the inclusive design analysis into a recommendation while keeping the decision open to new evidence.

Trace stakeholder interview

Build a decision ledger.

Separate the current condition, the stakeholder affected, the evidence supporting problem framing, the mechanism represented by stakeholder interview and the criterion supplied by inclusive design.

If a inclusive design recommendation cannot point back to one of those entries, it is probably preference dressed as analysis rather than a consequence of the case.

Compare at least two feasible options against the same criteria. State who benefits under inclusive design, who bears cost or risk, what capability implementation requires and what evidence would reveal failure.

This comparison is essential when students need to turn stakeholder and user evidence into a testable studio problem, because an attractive option is not defensible until its trade-offs are visible.

Rehearse the fit5120 problem framing response as a short briefing: one sentence for the decision, two for the evidence and mechanism, one for the alternative and one for the qualified recommendation.

Then expand only the stakeholder interview move that needs more support. This protects the argument structure under a strict word or time limit.

A complete response should make the task visible before the detail: identify what must be decided, define the relevant terms, connect the evidence to stakeholder interview, and use inclusive design to test the result.

The final sentence about inclusive design should answer the question actually asked rather than merely repeat the topic.

The controlling limit is specific: one sponsor voice cannot represent all users or prove a preferred solution.

Keep that inclusive design limit beside the worked example, because it separates a careful fit5120 answer from one that sounds confident but claims more than the task or evidence supports.

For revision, retrieve problem framing, stakeholder interview and inclusive design without notes, explain their relationship aloud, then complete a changed version of the application: turn stakeholder and user evidence into a testable studio problem.

Record the first failed stakeholder interview reasoning move and repair it before attempting another case.

Separate need from solution

Q. AskSia-authored practice. A client asks for a chatbot because support email is slow. What should discovery establish? The step allocation is an independently authored practice structure, not an official marking scheme.
  • 1Map the current support journey and delay.
  • 1Interview staff and varied users.
  • 1Quantify request types and failure impact.
  • 1Frame the need before selecting technology.
The need may be faster triage, clearer self-service or staffing—not necessarily a chatbot. Discovery should identify users, request patterns, accessibility and escalation requirements first.
Sia tip — A requested feature is evidence about stakeholder preference, not yet the problem definition.

FAQ

Design Thinking and Inclusive Discovery FAQ

What must survive the move required to turn stakeholder and user evidence into a testable studio problem?

Turn stakeholder and user evidence into a testable studio problem. Week 1 combines design thinking with explicit inclusive-design material. Evidence-led statement of the need, affected users, context and consequence without assuming a solution. This chapter uses the concept when students turn stakeholder and user evidence into a testable studio problem.

Can one sponsor voice represent all users or prove a preferred solution?

One sponsor voice cannot represent all users or prove a preferred solution. Structured conversation used to learn goals, workflows, constraints and meanings from an affected person. It helps explain the reasoning required to turn stakeholder and user evidence into a testable studio problem.

If a student were to add an excluded user, how should they revise the problem statement rather than bolt on an accommodation?

The need may be faster triage, clearer self-service or staffing—not necessarily a chatbot. Discovery should identify users, request patterns, accessibility and escalation requirements first.

Assessment move

Reconstruct the relationship among problem framing, stakeholder interview and inclusive design; complete the chapter application without notes; then test the result against this limit: one sponsor voice cannot represent all users or prove a preferred solution.
