MKB2705 Chap.1 The Business Research Process
The Business Research Process
Business research begins with a management decision, not with a preferred survey or dataset. A decision-maker may need to identify an emerging problem, explain an established pattern, compare possible actions or monitor an opportunity. The research problem states what information would reduce that uncertainty.
Keeping the decision and information problem separate prevents a symptom, such as rising evening complaints, from being mistaken for its cause. The current Week 1 sequence treats research as a systematic and objective process of identifying, collecting, analysing, communicating and using information. Systematic means that each step follows a visible plan.
Objective means that assumptions, rival explanations and inconvenient evidence can be challenged; it does not remove professional judgement. The six-stage cycle moves from problem definition and approach development through design, data collection, preparation and analysis, then reporting and use. Each transition needs a control.
A well-written question can still fail if the sample excludes the people affected, a clean dataset can still measure the wrong construct, and an accurate report can arrive too late to change the decision. Research value therefore depends on relevance, feasibility, timing, access, cost and ethics as well as technical method.
Before commissioning work, ask whether the required evidence can be obtained responsibly and whether any plausible result would change the pending action. Research suppliers can contribute design, fieldwork, analysis or specialist access, but management retains responsibility for the decision boundary and ethical use of findings.
A useful brief names the actor, action, uncertainty, represented population, decision date and minimum evidence needed. Reporting then closes the loop by separating observations from interpretation, explaining limitations and identifying what should be decided, tested or learned next. The original gym scenario in this chapter uses an increase in evening complaints to practise that discipline.
It does not assume that staffing is the cause; it maps competing explanations and the evidence needed to distinguish them. Current teaching grounds the chapter, while all practice language and numbers are independent study material rather than live questions, rubrics or private course artifacts.

Decision use
AskSia-authored practice weighting (not an official mark scheme): Original worked model: the business research process
- +1State the management or evidence question, population and decision use before naming a method.
- +1Choose and defend the relevant design, measure, sample or analysis, preserving the correct valid base.
- +1Report the result or planned output with magnitude, uncertainty and a precise evidence noun.
- +1State the main limitation and a conditional decision or follow-up that does not exceed the evidence.
Key terms
- management decision problem
- A key concept in The Business Research Process: define it in the population, context and decision for this study rather than relying on a label alone.
- problem-identification research
- A control term used to keep the business research process technically and conceptually traceable across the project.
- research-value gate
- A boundary or diagnostic that should appear beside the relevant result, not only in a generic limitations paragraph.
The Business Research Process FAQ
How does the business research process support MKB2705 assessment?
It supplies a specific research decision, evidence control and claim boundary that can support the proposal, class-test reasoning, SPSS report or reflection. Apply it to your own project and current Moodle task rather than copying the worked model.
What is the most common the business research process mistake?
The common failure is letting a convenient method, software output or confident phrase replace the decision question and represented evidence. Keep population, construct, valid base and design visible.
Can AI complete this the business research process work?
No. Follow the current task-specific rule. Use only permitted support, verify every source and number, author submitted prose yourself and complete the required declaration. Quizzes say AI should not be used.
Assessment move
Begin with a one-sentence decision brief naming actor, action, uncertainty and decision date. Draw the six research stages from problem definition to use, then attach one deliverable and one failure risk to every transition. For a fresh scenario, separate problem-identification evidence from problem-solving evidence and list two rival explanations before choosing a method.
Ask whether each plausible result could change the action; if not, refine the question or reconsider the value of the study. Finish with an ethical-use audit covering affected people, necessary data, access, timing and who owns the final decision. Explain the whole cycle aloud without method jargon, then check that another reader could reconstruct why the research exists.
Keep current Moodle requirements beside this learning exercise and author assessed work independently. Retest the decision brief after every major finding so the project remains useful.
