A technically competent survey still fails if it answers the wrong decision or reaches the decision-maker too late.

The first move is translation. A management symptom such as falling renewal, an unexplained complaint pattern or a weak campaign must become a research problem, then a question whose population, variables and comparison can be observed. Research objectives define the work to be completed.

Hypotheses make predicted relationships testable. Keeping those layers separate prevents a broad concern from turning into a vague questionnaire.

Design choice follows the uncertainty. Exploratory work clarifies an ill-formed problem; descriptive work estimates characteristics or patterns; causal work tests whether a change produces an effect under defensible conditions.

Cross-sectional and longitudinal evidence answer different time questions. Primary and secondary sources impose different control, cost and provenance requirements. The guide uses standard research-methods canon aligned to the unit sequence for these choices.

Measurement connects an abstract construct to observable responses or behaviour.

A strong design defines the construct, chooses a scale, checks reliability and validity, and records what each variable can support analytically. Questionnaire wording, response options, routing and order are part of that measurement system. Pretesting is a diagnosis of interpretation and flow, not a final proofreading pass.

Sampling determines whose evidence can support which claim.

Define the target population, sampling frame, unit and selection method before discussing sample size. Separate sampling error from coverage, nonresponse and measurement error. A larger dataset does not repair a biased frame.

The analysis file then needs a codebook, explicit missing-value rules, range and logic checks, and reproducible SPSS transformations.

Descriptive statistics establish the base, distribution, centre, spread and unusual observations before inference begins. Hypothesis tests add a model of sampling uncertainty; they do not replace effect size, confidence interval, assumptions or managerial relevance.

Chi-square addresses association between categorical variables, t-tests compare means under the selected design, and correlation summarises linear association without proving causation.

The research report should preserve the chain from decision to evidence. Methods explain what was done and why. Results report the analysis without hiding inconvenient observations.

Discussion connects findings to the question, limitations and alternative explanations. Recommendations identify an actor, action and evidence boundary.

Reflection then evaluates how research judgement changed, using specific decisions and feedback rather than a diary of activities.
