Ethical Frameworks in Practice

Ethical frameworks are lenses that reveal different morally relevant features of the same decision. Consequence reasoning examines outcomes and distribution; duty reasoning examines rights and principles; virtue ethics examines character; care ethics examines relationship and dependency. The chapter focuses on application, comparison and answering the strongest objection.

Limit wearable monitoring

Q [4 marks]. A warehouse proposes wearable tracking to prevent collisions. Apply multiple ethical lenses and recommend conditions. The marks shown for step planning are not an official university marking scheme.
  • 1Assess safety benefits and monitoring harms.
  • 1Identify duties of notice, limits and fair treatment.
  • 1Examine worker dependency and voice.
  • 1Recommend a narrow, reviewable safety pilot.
Use a narrow safety trial with data minimisation, worker participation, no productivity scoring, an appeal route and independent review of actual incidents.
Sia tip — Do not stop after defining a framework; connect its principle to one case fact and stakeholder effect.
Glossary

Key terms

Utilitarian reasoning
Evaluation of overall consequences, including their distribution, likelihood and duration.
Deontological reasoning
Evaluation grounded in duties, rights and principles that constrain action.
Care ethics
Evaluation centred on relationships, dependency, context and responsive responsibility.
FAQ

Ethical Frameworks in Practice FAQ

Must all frameworks agree?

No. Agreement can strengthen a case, while disagreement reveals the trade-off that the recommendation must justify. The chapter method applies this point to consequences and distribution and shows how it changes a practical decision.

What is the application step?

Identify the case feature a framework treats as morally important and explain how that feature counts for or against an option. The chapter method applies this point to duties and rights and shows how it changes a practical decision.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Create a four-column lens table for one dilemma, but finish with an integrated recommendation. Circle the framework conflict that requires the most explanation.

Build a detailed working note from the chapter: C5 · ETHICAL LENSES Compare ethical frameworks without caricature C-COMPARE · WEEK 5 Use consequences, duties, virtues and care to expose different reasons utilitarianism · deontology · virtue · care Ethical frameworks discipline judgement by making the basis of a claim explicit;

Utilitarian reasoning examines overall consequences; deontological reasoning asks about duties, rights and principles; virtue ethics considers the character expressed through action; care ethics attends to relationships, dependency and contextual responsibility;

None should be reduced to a one-line slogan, and no framework automatically produces the correct recommendation; Ask each lens its strongest question A consequence analysis identifies benefits and harms, their distribution, likelihood and duration;

A duty analysis checks whether people are used merely as instruments or denied a right; A virtue analysis asks what a trustworthy professional or organisation would cultivate; A care analysis notices vulnerability, history and unequal dependence;

Agreement across lenses can strengthen a recommendation; disagreement reveals the trade-off that must be justified; Decision under review Consequences Duties Character Relationships Frameworks are lenses, not answer machines;

Their value lies in the different questions they force into view; Lens Question Typical blind spot if used alone Consequences Which option produces better effects overall; Minority rights may be traded away Duties What must or must not be done;

Context and outcomes may receive too little weight Virtues What character does this action express; Standards can remain vague Care Which relationships and dependencies create responsibility; Scope beyond close relationships may be unclear ✓ Apply, compare, then decide Use at least two lenses to illuminate the same facts;

Do not write four disconnected definitions; C5 · FRAMEWORK PRACTICE Turn framework language into analysis G-CLINIC · APPLICATION Connect a principle to facts, stakeholders and a practical choice premise · application · objection · response The missing middle is application Weak writing defines a framework and jumps to a verdict;

Strong writing identifies the morally relevant feature of the case, explains why the framework treats it as important and traces the implication for an option; It then tests the conclusion against a rival lens or counterargument;

This “because” chain is what makes theory useful in a business report; APPLICATION CHAIN Framework principle + case fact + stakeholder effect → reason for or against an option; Then test the reason against a serious objection;

MODEL Monitoring workers for safety multi-lens synthesis A warehouse proposes wearable tracking to prevent collisions; Consequence reasoning supports a trial if injury reduction is credible, but also counts stress, false alerts and misuse;

A duty lens challenges continuous monitoring without meaningful notice or limits; Care ethics highlights workers who cannot refuse and supervisors responsible for safe conditions; The recommendation is a narrow safety trial with data minimisation, worker participation, no productivity scoring, an appeal process and an independent review of actual incidents;

TRY 1 Application sentence AskSia practice Prompt: Apply deontology to deceptive environmental advertising; Answer: Misleading claims deny customers information needed for autonomous choice, so accuracy is a duty even when the campaign increases sales;

TRY 2 Counter-lens AskSia practice Prompt: A utilitarian case favours closing a costly service; What should care ethics add; Answer: Examine dependency, unequal transition capacity and the responsibilities created by a continuing relationship; Close framework analysis with a practical safeguard that answers the strongest objection, not with the claim that every theory agrees; CLOSING MOVE · ANSWER THE OBJECTION.
