What MGMT5050 covers

The course moves from responsible professional judgement and sustainability through ethical decision tools, stakeholder responsibility and ethical frameworks, then develops cultural humility, ESG evidence, responsible leadership, influence and professional purpose.

The learning sequence connects sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals with context analysis, ethical decision processes, corporate social responsibility, stakeholder responsibility and ethical frameworks. Later topics examine cultural humility, ESG evidence, responsible leadership, power, agency, influence and the purpose a developing professional brings to changing work.

The published assessment is entirely coursework. Students demonstrate learning through a Memo, Report, Cumulative learning Reflection and Participation. Across these genres, strong work establishes context, makes stakeholder effects visible, applies concepts to facts, compares feasible choices, recommends action and acknowledges a material limitation.

The guide uses original scenarios and methods for practice; students should always follow the current Assessment Guide and Moodle instructions for submission, referencing and permitted use of generative AI. The course rewards integration rather than isolated definitions.

A sustainability claim needs stakeholder consequences and evidence; an ethical framework needs application to facts; leadership needs observable action and openness to feedback. Professional reflection then asks how these ideas change future practice. Keep a weekly decision record that notes the issue, evidence, affected people, concept, tension and next action.

That record gives later assessments specific material and makes development visible without inventing a smooth story after the event. This supports accountable professional learning and strengthens preparation for tutorial discussion and feedback.

Recommend a responsible pilot for workplace decision software

Q [5 marks]. A business wants software to rank employee performance, but workers cannot see how scores are produced. Develop a recommendation that addresses operational value, stakeholder effects, ethical reasons and review. The marks shown for independent study are not an official university marking scheme.
  • 1Define the decision boundary and identify who owns the decision.
  • 1Map workers, managers, customers and oversight roles by interest, influence and exposure.
  • 1Compare efficiency benefits with duties of fair treatment, explanation and correction.
  • 1Recommend a limited pilot with data minimisation, human review and an appeal route.
  • 1Name an indicator and a decision point for stopping, changing or expanding the pilot.
Run a limited pilot only after workers help define valid criteria. Keep the scores out of employment decisions until independent testing shows that they are accurate and fair. Minimise data, explain the system, provide trained human review and create a prompt appeal route. Compare operational results with disputed scores and stakeholder feedback before any expansion.
Sia tip — Write the affected stakeholder and safeguard into the recommendation sentence. This prevents the control from becoming an afterthought.

FAQ

MGMT5050 FAQ

How is the course assessed?

The published structure has four coursework components: a Memo worth 15%, a Report worth 30%, a Cumulative learning Reflection worth 35% and Participation worth 20%. The course guide explains the parts within reflection and participation, and the current Moodle instructions control submission details.

What makes ethical analysis strong?

Strong analysis defines the decision, identifies affected stakeholders, applies a framework to case facts, compares feasible options and justifies a practical recommendation. It also addresses a serious objection or limitation instead of claiming that every value points in the same direction.

How should stakeholders be prioritised?

Prioritisation should consider the seriousness of each stake, the organisation's responsibility, the group's influence and its ability to protect itself. Low power does not mean low importance; a vulnerable group may require stronger protection and a safer route to voice.

How should the SDGs be used?

Use an SDG to identify an outcome area, then explain the causal pathway from organisational action to stakeholder or environmental effect. Distinguish alignment from demonstrated contribution and choose an indicator that could test whether the claimed change occurred.

What gives professional reflection depth?

A strong reflection describes a specific experience briefly, interprets why it mattered through course concepts, shows how a prior view changed or was reinforced, names an unresolved tension and commits to a future action that another person could observe.

Can generative AI be used for coursework?

Rules differ by task and activity. Follow the current Assessment Guide and Moodle instructions, complete any required declaration, keep evidence of your own reasoning and revision, and verify every factual claim and reference before submitting work.

Study strategy

How to prepare for the assessments

Treat the course as one connected reasoning practice. After each week, write a short case note with the decision, stakeholders, relevant concept, strongest objection and next action. Before a written assessment, build an evidence table that separates source facts from interpretation and links each paragraph to the recommendation.

Rehearse explaining the same dilemma through more than one ethical lens, then decide which reasons are most important in context. For reflection tasks, preserve specific tutorial activities and record how they challenged or reinforced your thinking. Before submission, compare the final recommendation with the opening problem, verify references, check the task-specific generative-AI rule and open the uploaded file.
